SENIOR THREE FINAL EXAM Paper 1
Time allowed: 1h.15’ (+ List: 1h. 30’)
SECTION A: Reading Comprehension
Read the text and circle the correct option, true (T) or false (F).

No past or future
When you first meet John Forbes at a party, you probably think he is shy. If you start talking about
one of his favourite subjects – politics, science fiction or computer games – you often find him interesting
and amusing. If you meet him again the following night, you will probably think he is rude or arrogant
because he won't recognise you, your name or the conversation from the previous night. However, John
isn't rude or arrogant; he suffers from a rare brain disorder that stops him remembering everyday events.
In John's world there is no past or future. He has difficulty remembering a telephone conversation
from a moment earlier. He cannot find his way around town and rarely goes to places he doesn't know. If he
does, he takes a map, detailed notes of the route and the reason for the journey.
On the other hand, his factual memory is good. He was successful at school and can remember
dates from his history lessons, but then cannot remember that his sister left college a year ago.
Although John would like to get a job and learn to drive for example, this is another big problem. He
will see a warning sign, forget it, and fail to take the necessary action. As for work, his parents encouraged
him to get a job. They let him apply for jobs without mentioning his memory problems. However, on one
occasion he got a job in a glass factory... Fortunately, he did not have an accident. 'If you don't remember
to keep your hand away from a piece of machinery, you can be badly hurt,' says his father, Mike.
John spends a lot of his time at home, playing computer games and watching TV news reports, at
regular intervals so he can remember the information. When you ask John how he feels about his life, he
has a practical attitude. As he says, 'I live for the moment - I don't think about tomorrow.'
