Learning Objective Science Living Systems and Processes

4.2 The student will investigate and understand that plants and
animals have structures that distinguish them from one
another and play vital roles in their ability to survive. Key ideas
include: c) plants and animals have different structures and
processes for creating offspring.

Complete the sentence below:

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to touch the
board to move labels onto the correct parts of a flower and learn about the reproductive
structures and processes in plants.

Activity In this activity, students will be learning about the different

structures and processes plants have for creating offspring.
Students will learn that for a population to thrive, it’s members
must be able to reproduce. Students will compare plant
characteristics used for attracting pollinators. Students will
explain the model of a flower and be able to identify the parts
of the flower and its reproductive processes. Students will
understand that most plants reproduce with seeds which are
formed in the reproductive process of flowering plants.
Students will learn that pollination is the process by which
pollen is transferred from the stamin to the pistil. This transfer
can occur as a result of wind, water, or animals. Scents and
colors of flowers are attractive to certain pollinators.
Students will move to their small science groups (3 to 4
students) to work on the interactive activity, Plant
Reproduction, together as a group.
 The students are first told that all species must have
some way to reproduce. The students are first posed
with the question; What are the two different types of
reproduction? The students are given time to engage in
inquiry within their group before moving to the next
frame. The students will use the IWB to complete the
graphic organizer to answer this question by dragging
and dropping the correct answer into the correct
position. The students can check their answers when
they are done and discuss what they answered
correctly or incorrectly.
 The students are told that seed plants produce
sexually. The students will then label the reproductive
parts of the flower by dragging and dropping the
correct terms into the correct places on the flower,
using the IWB. The students can check their answers
when they are done and discuss what they answered
correctly or incorrectly.
 The students will then compare the two different types
of plant reproduction. Sexual reproduction and
vegetative reproduction. The students will take turns
by reading a sentence each describing these two types
of plant reproduction.
 The students will then watch a video on pollination
together. After the video, the students will put the
steps that occur in pollination and fertilization in order,
by dragging and dropping each process into the correct
order of process on the IWB. The students can check
their answers when they are done and discuss what
they answered correctly or incorrectly.
 Students will continue to strengthen their learning in
this objective by using printed handouts about the two
types of plant reproduction, the reproductive parts of
the flower and the order of the steps in pollination and
fertilization.
