Standards:

nonfiction, and poetry.
a) Describe how the choice of language, setting, and characters contributes to the
development of plot.

Objectives

● Content: The student will be able to identify character traits and evidence from the
story.
● Language: The student will be able to orally describe characters and events from
the story.

Key Vocabulary:

Materials:
Powerpoint
Graphic organizer
Story- Pecos Bill and the Bear Lake Monster

Practice/Application:

The lesson will be introduced to the students by refreshing their memory of character
traits. Then, the teacher will discuss each vocabulary slides with the student. The teacher will
first model and then students will say the word, definition, and use the word in a sentence using
the provided sentence frames. Each student should have to opportunity to practice saying the
word and using it in the sentence frame.
The teacher will introduce the story to the students and do a read-aloud and periodically stop and
ask discussion questions to check for understanding.

After the read aloud, the teacher and student will complete the character trait graphic organizer
together. The teacher will lead a discussion about the story and will ask the students questions
about the main characters and students will provide evidence from the text to support the
character traits they have identified.

Before releasing the student to complete the “Go and Do”, TW ask each student what they will
write on their own graphic organizer to check for understanding one last time.
Assessment:
For the student’s “Go and Do” activity, they will re-read the story by themselves and fill out the
character trait chart again.
