Le Maître Des Maîtres
Le Maître Des Maîtres
ic scene of the Seventies. And while, as we shall see below, this revolutionary stance does re
flect the reality of the movement's emergence as a counter-weight to the post-serialists surro
unding Pierre Boulez, it does not mean that the movement was purely reactive. Spectral musi
c does have its compositional forebears. One can certainly cite Varèse's sensitivity to sound
or even that of the Italian futurists. On a more specific note one might point to Jolivet's expe
riments with harmonic spectra (inspired by an attempt to imitate the mixture stops on an org
an), or the early micro-tonal experiments of Wïshnegradsky or Carrillo, not to mention som
ockhausen's experiments both there and in Gruppen were very influencial on Grisey, albeit
less so on Murail.
Although all these influences on the development of the spectral movement were important, i
n a general way, my focus will be upon the three figures who had the most direct impact on t
he origins of spectral music: Messiaen, Ligeti and Scelsi. These three figures played pivotal
and very different roles in Grisey and Murail's compositional and aesthetic development. It i
s difficult to imagine their music of the early seventies - the pieces which have become the d
efining classics of early spectral music - without the profound influence exerted by all three
figures on the young and still searching Grisey and Murail of the late-sixties.
Messiaen was the composer who assisted most directly in the birth of the Spectral Moveme
nt. While his music was probably less influential for spectral composers than that of Ligeti
or Scelsi, it was Messiaen who was the professor of both Grisey and Murail (along with ma
ny of the other composers who formed the Group L'Itinéraire and shared many of the attitu

al of analog electronic music. From the sonic objects of 'musique concrete' to the real-time tr
eatments of ring-modulators, the works of early electronic music offered an invaluable stock
of models to the later works of spectral composers.
