What was Nationalism?

Nationalism is when someone only cares about their own country. You also only care about what
interests people in your country, not anywhere else.

Militarism is when a country beefs up their defenses to scare other countries around them.

3.) IN YOUR OWN WORDS, What was the Alliance System?

An alliance is when people, a country, or an organization with the same interests form a group that will
benefit them and everyone behind them. For example, if a country is under attack from others they are
going to all ban together as an alliance to fight.

4.) Look at those Four Big Reasons for WWI (Nationalism, Imperialism, Militarism, Alliance System).
What kind of environment did those reasons create in the world? How would you describe the mood in
the world at this time?
The environment among the countries was very competitive. There were many teams formed.
Everybody’s alliance was bigger than the one before them. Everyone started increasing their armies and
spending more money.
The mood in the world at this time was very tense. Everyone was walking on eggshells because they
didn’t want to tick anyone off due to being attacked by another alliance.

5.) What effect did the Alliance System have for PREVENTING war? Why would having an alliance be a
good idea to try to stop a war with someone else?

The Alliance System protected some of the smaller countries from being attacked by the much larger
ones.
If someone else had an alliance larger than the opposing country, they would have no reason to attack,
because the country with the smaller alliance is going to obviously lose.

6.) What did the Alliance System and the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand have to do with each
other?

Hi assassination caused complete chaos all across Europe, causing alliances to jump to help. This chaos
eventually brought about World War I.

7.) What was the style of war that was fought in WWI? Why was it not a good way to fight?

The way the war was fought was horrible and stupid. The war was very unproductive because people
would just shoot each other; there was a lot of blood shed. The fighters stayed in the trenches they
built around “No Man’s Land”, a place covered in wire that anyone barely got out of.
8.) What were reasons that people had for the United States to STAY OUT of the war?

People did not want their kids fighting in the war, or just generally did not believe it war. Some people
also thought that the United States should just mind its own business.

They thought that it was time for the United States to step in and help Britain before things got any
worse; they had the same interests as Britain.
Some people felt strongly about their homelands being attacked.
The United States has connections with Britain and France with trade France that involved trading. If
they are in trouble the United States is in trouble.

10.) Opinion Question: Should we have joined the war? Answer this in 2-3 GOOD sentences.

In the beginning it was great idea to join the war, because the United States made a lot of money by
suppling things that were needed. It was also a good idea for the United States to join because the
telegram might have never been intercepted.
