CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter explains how the researcher does the research. It consists of the description
of the research design, data and sources of data, research procedures, data collection, data
analysis.

3.1 Research Design

The aims of this research are to describe the effectiveness of Teaching Practice Program
on virtual learning to support teaching skills of English Language Education batch 2017.
Through this research, the influence of teaching practice program in teaching skills of English
Language Education students who become as participant in this research will be revealed. The
participants in this study will have to analyze their experience when doing Teaching Practice
Program on Virtual Learning. Based on the aims above, the appropiate research design for this
research is qualitative research. Qualitative research is aimed to explain or express the
experience of the respondents. According to Rahmat (2009:8), qualitative research is “a research
procedure that produces descriptive data as a form of utterance and script from a respondent”. It
means that the result of qualitative research will be a description.

3.2 Data and Sources Data

This subchapter explains about the setting and the participants of the study as the sources
of this study.

3.2.1 Setting of the Study

This research is conducted via online through google form. The subject of this research is
the Students at English Education Program of Brawijaya University who did a Teaching Practice
Program on Virtual Learning. The purpose of this research to give information on the students'
perception of Teaching Practice Program in virtual learning does it support their teaching skills
based on experience.
3.2 Participants of the study

The participants of the research are students of English Language Education Brawijaya
University Batch 2017. These English Language Education students have had experience in
Teaching Practice Program in virtual learning that they did in the sixth semester. Their
experience in doing Teaching Practice Program is the main data for this research. Thus, students
that are eligible for this research are those who have done the teaching practice program subject.
They are asked to declare their willingness to be recorded. Their identity is disguised to protect
the respondents from any foreseen threats.

3.3 Research Procedures

To get the data, firstly the researcher looked for some questionnaire about Teaching
Practice Program in Virtual learning support their teaching skills from the previous studies.
Secondly, the researcher adapted the questionnaires from experts. After that, the questionnaire
was distributed to students of who did a Teaching Practice Program in Virtual Learning at
English Education Program of Brawijaya University to get the data of the students' perceptions
of Teaching Practice Program in Virtual Learning to support their teaching skills. After
calculating the result of the questionnaire, the researcher conducts the interview section with the
students chosen before. The objective of questions in interview is collecting the information
about their opinion in teaching practice program that they have done and also to know what kind
of skill that they got after it. Lastly, the result of the questionnaire and interview will be analyzed
and interpreted to get the final result.

3.4 Data Collection Method

Based statement above, this research use interviews as the data collection method.
Because interview is often used in a qualitative research and considered as an appropriate
method since it is concerned with the information, understanding and also the feelings of the
individual (Hancock, 2002). Through this method, researcher will give some question for
participant to get our information with some questionnaires and interview. Then, the respondent
will be interviewed one by one. The results of questionnaires will be analyzed to know student’s
perception about teaching practice program in virtual learning. The reason for collecting this data
was to get information about the students' perceptions needed.

3.5 Data Analysis

The last step after conduction the interview is analyze the data from the interview. There
are three steps employed in this research to analyze the data, those are: transcribing the data,
coding the data, and categorizing the data. The first thing that has to be done is writing the
transcript from the interview. After transcript-writing process, coding and categorizing the data is
performed. The goal of this data analysis is to interpret student answer, so it can be reported. And
the results of of questionnaires will be analyzed to make data more valid.
