CONCLUSION
I really like and enjoy these
new Dual Combo kits from
Eduard. They combine their
excellent model kits with a
historical context in a way
that is quite attractive and
also drive motivation to
actually build two models
at the same time – that
can only be a good thing!
The high quality of the
kits and the fun to build
and paint them coupled
with the parallel reading
of books on the historical
theme of the desperate air
fighting over Germany, and
the personal histories of
Knoke and Moritz made this
project into one of the most
enjoyable effort in a long
time. Well done, Eduard! ●

THE KIT
The Tamiya Tiran 5 kit is
extremely detailed and the
parts fit together in a very close
to perfect accuracy. I added the
Legend Productions detailing
set to get even better details,
but it's not really necessary.
The kit is detailed enough even
if you build it directly out of the
box. When I build tank models,
I usually treat the task as if it
were two models: the hull and
the turret. I start by building
the hull. I build it completely
including painting. Only then,
I begin to build the turret
and also in this case, I build
it completely and paint it the
same way. The first time, the
turret and the hull join together
is at the weathering stage.
But before I jump to
weathering, let's say a few
words about the assembling
and the painting. I think the
most important step when
building a model that has a
large number of PE and resin
parts is the assembling phase.
Much attention should be paid
when gluing the metal and
resin parts, especially because
of the fact that some of them
are extremely tiny. It is very
easy to lose them or to damage
them on one side, or damage
the adhesive area, on the other,
if you use too much glue. I
usually glue small PE and resin
parts with Tamiya CA Cement
Quick Type Instant Glue
#87062 using 0.5mm metal
wire. I built the hull completely
but still did not glue the tracks
in place. I wanted to give the
model a look of battered, tired
and rusty tank. U

hen I was asked to build this Zoukei
Mura F-4C for TMMI I was very
honoured. I had heard a lot of good
things about the Zoukei-Mura
Phantom II and I was very curious about the
quality of the kit. After opening the box I was
impressed with the enormous amount of sprues
it contained; twelve, fully loaded sprues came
out of the box plus a very comprehensive,
thirty-eight page construction guide, a fantastic
sheet of decals and a nice colourful print of
the box-art. I wanted to do a colourful scheme
but not the South East Asia colours this time
and soon a plan was formed. I went looking for
some nice decals and stumbled upon Caracal’s
sheet No.48038 F-4C/D Air National Guard
Part 3. On it I found a Phantom of the Texas
ANG in Euro1 camouflage which was based at
Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. I was
told Colonel Robin Olds flew this McDonnell

B. Croker shot down two VPAF MiG-17s near

halves, genius! I found the fit of the parts to
be excellent. I used a black base of Tamiya
X-18 and Gunze H307 for the cockpit as a
base grey colour.
The cockpit is cemented on top of the front
wheel-bay and it aligns perfectly with the
opening, once the fuselage halves are mated.
A little filler was used for the fuselage in The bottom plate and

smooth. All of the rivets I was looking for Everything lines up really
were present on the kit, except on the tail, well and fits like a glove
so I added these myself using my trusted
Rosie the Riveter tool.
As construction went on there was one
thing that kept surprising me. The kit is
made up from a lot of components and every
time I started taking new mouldings from
the sprues I thought: “With this many parts,
I sure hope they will fit too”, because we all
know that even if a few fit well, it's is never
a guarantee that the next ones will. This kit
is an exception, the parts keep coming and
they keep on fitting very well. This gave me
a fantastic building experience and I believe
that is what counts.
The only parts which didn’t fit perfectly The top of the fuselage
were the bottom sections of the intakes. I is mounted and drops
filled them with some strips of Evergreen nicely over the intake
plastic which was an easy fix. The kit ducts and engines
contains a full pair of engines and a
complete intake tunnel which is a great
feature. I painted the insides of the intakes
white using Alclad 2 Gloss White Primer
which gave them the shiny appearance I
was looking for. What was also really nice
was that the canopies all fitted perfectly
which made painting so much easier. I
remember having some trouble with fitting
the canopies on Phantoms from one of the
other brands, so this was a welcome change.
Time for some metal. Very careful masking Alclad 2 Dark Aluminium was used as a base
was necessary to get the perfect outlines for shade. Then, several panels were masked
the metallic colours. Black primer was used and painted in a variety of Alclad
as a base for the metallics shades which were mixed by

V DECALS
As said in the preface, I used Caracals’
excellent decal sheet which are printed
by Cartograf so they were top-notch;
thin and strong and conformed well to
the surface with decal-setting solutions.
Despite my efforts to prevent silvering,
I didn’t manage to prevent it. My guess
is that the reason for this is that I do
the 'wash prior to applying the decals Mr Hobby Matt Red was
which I will be changing for future applied on top of a light grey

of the airbrakes. This keeps
do I need to apply stencils or not? And the red from discolouring
if so, how many and which ones? After too much which happens
putting this question out on Facebook it when using black
became apparent that these particular
aircraft had very little stencilling and
not even walkways! So that made life
for me quite a bit easier.
