2. 5.
Sweet Jesus went down to yonder town, “And I bid God bless them every one,
As far as the holy well, And their bodies Christ save and see;
And there did see as fine children Little children, shall I play with you?
As any tongue can tell. And you shall play with me.
He said, “God bless you every one, But then they answered me ‘No’;
And your bodies Christ save and see; They were lords’ and ladies’ sons,
Little children, shall I play with you? And I was but a maiden’s child,
And you shall play with me.” Born in an ox’s stall.”

3. 6.
But they made answer to him, “No”; “Though you are but a maiden’s child,
They were lords’ and ladies’ sons, Born in an ox’s stall,
And he was but a maiden’s child, Thon art the Christ, the King of Heaven,
Born in an ox’s stall. And the Saviour of them all,
Sweet Jesus turned him round about, Sweet Jesus, go down into yonder town,
And he neither laughed nor smiled, And as far as the holy well,
But the tears came trickling from his eyes And take away those sinful souls,
Like water from the skies. And dip them deep in hell.”

4. 7.
Sweet Jesus turned him round about, “Nay, nay,” sweet Jesus mildly said;
To his Mother dear home went he, “Nay, nay, that may not be,
And said, “I have been in yonder town, For there are too many sinful souls
As after you may see. Crying out for the help of me.”
I have been down in yonder town, O then spoke the Angel Gabriel,
As far as the holy well; Upon one sure set steven,
And there did I meet with as fine children “Although you are but a maiden’s child,
As any tongue can tell. You are the King of Heaven.”
