The main relay contains the measurement units, the distance trip zones with the relevant timers, the power swing element, the
output logic and all other subrelays.
More in detail the following functionalities are modelled in the main relay.
Two measurement units (“Measure” and “Delta Measure” block). Please don’t forget to insert the nominal current and
the nominal voltage in both blocks.
One starting unit implementing the phase selection logic (“Starting” block)
One directional element (“Dir-Z” block)
Five phase-phase loop polygonal distance zones with the relevant timers (“Z1P” and “Z1TP”, “Z2P” and “Z2TP”,
“Z3P” and Z3TP”, “Z4P” and “Z4TP”, “Z5P” and “Z5TP”block ).
Five phase-ground “loop polygonal distance zones with the relevant timers (“Z1G” and “Z1TG”, “Z2G” and “Z2TG”,
“Z3G” and “Z3TG”, “Z4G” and “Z4TG”, “Z5G” and “Z5TG”block ).
One phase-phase loop high speed polygonal distance zone (“Z1P High speed” block)
One phase-ground loop high speed polygonal distance zone (“Z1G High speed” block)
One element detecting the power swing conditions which can be configured to block the distance zones (“Power
Swing” block)
Two polarizing blocks (“Polarizing” and ”Polarizing20” block). Please note that no user input is usually needed in these
blocks. The ability to maintain the right directionality after a fault along a series compensated line is provided by the
“Polarizing20” block.
“TOC” subrelay:
One inverse characteristic phase overcurrent element (“TOC Phase” block)
One inverse characteristic residual overcurrent element (“TOC Residual” block)
One not directional inverse characteristic phase overcurrent element with minimum activation threshold and
additional trip delay (“Toc2”, “Toc2 tLow” and “Toc2 I>Low” block)
One time defined phase overcurrent element (“Toc2 I>High” block)
Three directional time defined zero sequence overcurrent elements (“EF4 Step 1”, “EF4 Step 2”, “EF4 Step 3”,” EF4
Dir” block”)
One not directional inverse characteristic zero sequence overcurrent element with minimum activation threshold and
additional trip delay (“EF4 Step 4”, “EF4 tLow” and “EF4 Step 4 Imin” block)
The ABB REL 531 model can be configured to support the following additional features:
o POTT (“Permissive overreach transfer trip”) scheme. It can be enabled setting equal to “TRIP” the “POTTTRIP”
variable in the “logic” tab page of the “Logic” block dialog.
o Single phase trip. It can be enabled setting equal to “TRIP” the “single_pole_trip” variable in the “logic” tab page of
the “Logic” block dialog.
o Two phases trip. It can be enabled setting equal to “TRIP” the “two_poles_trip” variable in the “logic” tab page of the
“Logic” block dialog.
The model implementation has been based on the information available in the “Technical reference manual
ProtectIT Line high speed distance protection terminal REL 531*2.3 Document No: 1MRK 506 073-UEN
Issued: June 2004 Revision: A” document.
