Reflection 3

This reflection is on a lesson I did during my first full week teaching in my second block.

In this lesson I am introducing a new song entitled Letter From A Girl to the World. I also lead

vocal warm ups, sight singing and a review on a short song they learned as a vocal exercise. This

was a lesson for the Sopraltos, an intermediate treble ensemble.

Overall the lesson went pretty well. The structure of the lesson plan was well thought out

and effective, the technology worked as it should and I got everything accomplished that I aimed

to do during the class period. However, there were things that I would like to improve upon

throughout the lesson.

The first thing I immediately noticed was the position of my laptop during warm ups.

Teaching virtually is still something we must adapt too and by watching this video I saw how

weird it was to look at myself at the angle my camera was at during warm ups. My camera was

below me because I was standing and not sitting. For future lessons I need to adjust my camera

so it is at the same height I am so the students can understand proper posture and see the breaths

I am taking.

Another thing I noticed was that I need to be more clear in my instruction. Because we

are virtual during the class period someone is sharing their screen so everyone can see the music

pdf. However, this means I must be very clear with my instruction as to where we are and what

we are doing because if that singular person doesn’t understand than the entire class is lost. I did

a good job explaining what we were doing but I need to be clear and concise as to where we are

starting. My cooperating teacher suggests that I give the page number, then system number, then

measure number so I will try to implement that in further lessons.

I am very proud of how much my students accomplished during the class period. I think I

did a good job creating and executing an effective well-paced lesson. However, I do think it is

hard to maintain engagement for such a long class period. One thing that I would change about

the structure of the lesson plan would be to put the kahoot game in the middle of class as a brain

break for students. Overall I am very proud of how this class period went.
