0 Company Profile – The Boeing Company

Boeing is one of the world’s leading aerospace companies, manufacturing commercial jetliners,
defense, and space and security systems. The company was founded by William Boeing in 1916
in Seattle, Washington.

In 1997, Boeing merged with McDonnell Douglas, which was a leading military aircraft
manufacturer at the time in America. This strategic move, resulted in making Boeing the
World’s largest aerospace enterprise. Upon acquisition, Boeing’s chairmain and CEO Philip
Condit remained in his position whilst Harry Stonecipher who was the former CEO of McDonell
Douglas, took over as the president and COO of the company.

At present as America’s biggest manufacturing exporter, Boeing supports airlines and


government customers in more than 150 countries. Now headquartered in Chicago, the
company employs over 153,000 people across the US and 65 more countries.

In 2017, Boeing was ranked 24 th on the “Fortune 500” list published by the Fortune Magazine
and also ranked 19th on “World’s Most Admired Companies” list in 2018.

Boeing’s unique strategy to get ahead of competition is based on leadership and innovation.
Their core focus is expanding the product line and services to cater to emerging customer
needs. Therefore, the competition strategy is more lenient towards a Product Development
strategy.
