CEAS 2009 European Air and Space Conference |

Introduction and welcome
As President of the Royal Aeronautical
Society, I am delighted to welcome all
delegates to the second CEAS European
Air and Space Conference in Manchester.
The Society is proud to be a founder member
of the 11-nation Council of European
Aerospace Societies and it is our privilege
to have been asked to organise CEAS 2009
on its behalf.
As the world’s oldest aerospace society and the one multidisciplinary professional institution dedicated to the global aerospace
community, the Society’s membership encompasses a wide range of disciplines in the aerospace sector which I hope you’ll agree
are reflected in our exciting and diverse conference programme.

I would like to offer my personal thanks to the Programme Committee who have done exceptional work in preparing a
stimulating conference programme. My thanks also goes to the Regional Advisory Group who have done sterling work in
providing an exciting partner programme and liaising effectively with local dignitaries, ensuring that the conference retains
a strong local presence in the North West.

I would like to thank our sponsors and the City of Manchester for their invaluable support, without which this event could not have
taken place.

We look forward to seeing you all in Manchester for what we know will be a successful conference.

Dr Mike Steeden
President of the Royal Aeronautical Society

CEAS 2009 European Air and Space Conference |

Foreword
It is a pleasure for me to welcome you
to the second CEAS European Air and
Space Conference in Manchester following
the very successful hosting of CEAS 2007
by DGLR of Germany in Berlin.

The conference here in Manchester has the theme New beginnings: challenges for aerospace innovation and will focus on
research, innovation, technical developments and studies across both civil and military air and space applications. I am sure this
conference will provide an ideal platform for the European air and space industry, academia and policy makers bringing together
experts from different branches and disciplines. Let me emphasise that especially in these economically difficult times it is very
helpful and most important to discuss innovative solutions, to benefit from know-how exchange and to enlarge our network in
order to cope with the challenges of the future of aeronautics and space. Manchester is at the centre of one of Europe’s leading
aerospace industrial clusters and therefore is an ideal venue for CEAS 2009.

I would like to thank the Programme Committee whose efforts have made this event possible and also the Royal Aeronautical
Society for their organisation of this conference.

I look forward to welcoming you to Manchester and I am certain that you will have a highly successful and most interesting event.

Prof Joachim Szodruch

President of CEAS
