Luis Carlos Galán

(Bucaramanga, September 29, 1943 - Soacha, August 18, 1989)

He was a Colombian lawyer, economist, journalist and politician, candidate for the
presidency of Colombia in 1982. He faced drug trafficking in Colombia, thus being
watched by many drug lords in the country.He had great relevance in Colombian
politics, as it was characterized by constructive criticism of corruption, he tried to
modernize Colombian political parties and institutions.
Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento is the son of the doctor Mario Galán Gómez, who
was a politician and president of Ecopetrol, and Cecilia Sarmiento Suárez. On
November 19, 1960 he graduated from college and entered the Javeriana
University, he stood out a lot thanks to all his intelligence and interest in politics.
Years later he received his diploma as a doctor in Law and Economics. On July 6,
1989, liberalism launched the presidential candidacy of Galán. All the polls showed
that he was going to be the winner, until on August 18, in the middle of the
electoral campaign, Galán went up to the platform in the Plaza de Soacha and was
killed by vandals, believed to be drug trafficking infiltrators.
