“You educate a man; you educate a man.

You educate a woman; you educate a

generation. –Brigham Young”. The poem Still I rise by the American civil rights activist and
writer Maya Angelou is a poem that is an assertion of the dignity and resilience of
marginalized people in the face of oppression it is a poem full of figurative language. The
author is depicting the story of an oppressed person, and how she overcomes her situation
by refusing to tied down in the societal issues. This poem is primarily about oppression, self-
respect and confidence.

In this poem, the author describes her situation as an oppressed person who reflects on
women who are with race and women in general who also experienced bullying, whom she
overcomes with grace and confidence. The first stanza shows what the oppressor can do
and that no matter how you trample on her, tell lies about her, she will still rise—describing
her rise metaphorically in almost every stanza, especially in the third stanza. The author
uses rhetorical questions like "Does my sassiness upset you?" to mock the racial society. In
stanzas four, five, and six, the author tells us the gesture of people on how they harass and
abuse women to make them inferior and shatter women. In the seventh stanza, the author
tells us how she values being a woman, not despite being a woman. Her value is derived
from being a woman and that it comes from within. The dance is being referred to as a
celebration as she has excellent value like diamonds. The eighth stanza shows a reminder
of women's history as slaves with fear and pain, which isn't something to over quickly with,
but she rises through that, not allowing those to define her. The line "I am a black ocean,
leaping and wide" reflects on black women that they wild, free, and strong, and it is a force
of nature that we cannot mess with. The author tells us that women are not powerful and
wonderful despite being a woman despite being black, but power and self-worth are derived
because of these things. The last stanza says that women before live with terror and fear,
which links to slavery, but she rises above that again, not allowing to define her life. Women
can be strong because of the past, not despite it, and overcome racism barriers.

This poem is such an inspiring poem that tells so much about women, especially black
women, that we must be who we should be and not what people tell us to be. Women are
strong and confident; we can rise in any circumstances we face, and no one can stop us.
Women are not inferior to men; we are all equal in God’s eyes; we all have equal rights. We
learn from this that we can all overcome hardships and triumph because there is always
hope to rise above.

The poem is an inspiring and moving poem that celebrates self-love and self-
acceptance. The poem takes the reader through a series of statements, the speaker makes
about herself. She praises her strength, her body, and her ability to rise up and away from
her personal and historical past. The message portrays in the poem is very clear because
no matter the inhumanity the faced, regardless of method and obstacle, the victim will rise
up just like air, it reminds us that no matter the obstacle in life were, there must always be
hope to cling to.
The poem title “Still I rise” written by Maya Angelou was an American Civil Rights
activist. It is a type of lyric poem and it is all about the struggle of black women to overcome
prejudice and injustice they struggle. Empowering women with independence and overcome
anything with her self-esteem that offers support and hope for those who are oppressed and
downtrodden. It invites women to rise and be confident on their own. In this poem the author
expressed herself in behalf of the women who were treated like dirt and a reminder of the abuse
of power by those oppressors. The author uses three kinds of figurative language: repetition,
metaphor, and similes to show to her readers about how she has overcome racism in her life
through demonstrating a strong, proud, and blank attitude to inspire others.

In the first stanza the author of the poet uses metaphor and simile in the poem
like in the third and fourth line “You may trod me in the very diet Betbdnsbfmn” The
speaker states that even her oppressor tries to trample on her as one might trample an
object or living creature in the dirt, she will still rise just as air rises. The poet uses
literary devices such as apostrophe, anaphora, and feminine endings to convey a
powerful and unwavering tone. The main structural device that the poet uses to support
her theme is the repetition of the phrase “I rise”. The poet keeps on repeating this phrase
a couple of times throughout her poem. This strategy will stick in our minds after reading
the poem. This poem inspires us to be courageous and be confident, as the poet reveals
how nothing can get her down as she will rise to any occasion and nothing, not even her
skin color will hold her back.
