Natural Waste Removal Proposal for Cuyahoga Community

College’s Westshore Campus

Overview

The Beta Upsilon Beta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor
Society would like to present a couple of ideas in regard to natural
food waste disposal methods at the Westshore Campus. Our ideas
align with the mission of the Rust Belt Riders which may potentially
spark a partnership. Throughout this proposal, we aim to suggest a
plan that will lessen the environmental impact that the Westshore
Campus has on the Earth. We propose that the Westshore Campus
subscribes to a Rust Belt Riders membership for their ‘pick-up
services.’ The Beta Upsilon Beta Chapter also recommends the
potential opportunity to partner with the Rust Belt Riders by becoming
a ‘community drop-off location.’ We feel this could be an opportunity
to expand Cuyahoga Community College’s community outreach while
supporting additional learning opportunities for students, staff, and
faculty.

Rust Belt Riders Pick-Up Membership

Our Chapter spoke with David November, Tri-C’s Sustainability

Manager, about the potential cost of a membership with the Rust Belt
Riders for their ‘pick-up services.’ We foresee the cost not exceeding
$40 a month based upon Westshore’s food waste output in contrast
to Tri-C’s larger campuses. However, due to COVID-19, we were
unable to receive an exact cost estimate from the Rust Belt Riders
due to limited activities on campus with respect to safety precautions.

When on-campus activities resume, our Beta Upsilon Beta Chapter

also intends to lead open discussions and workshops about the
general topic of environmental science with the intent of sharing
knowledge and creating awareness. Furthermore, we aspire to
procure the placement of natural food waste disposal bins inside of
the building for use by students, staff, and faculty.

Rust Belt Riders Community Drop-Off Bins

In addition to the Rust Belt Riders ‘pick-up membership,’ there is a

potential partnership with their organization that can positively impact
the local community by allowing the organization to place a few
compact, movable community drop-off bins at the Westshore
Campus. This would allow their members to dispose of food waste
while also creating community involvement on campus. We believe
that by encouraging community involvement at the Westshore
Campus, the overall mission of Tri-C is supported through an
environmental approach. In association with our desire to lead open
discussions and workshops about environmental science, the Beta
Uplision Beta Chapter seeks to expand our outreach beyond the
annual College Project by inviting community members to our future
events.

Summary

In conjunction with the Rust Belt Riders, we believe that our efforts
could positively affect the local environment and community.
Additionally, it would create new opportunities for community
outreach and educational engagement. Should the Westshore
Campus be interested in these opportunities, the Beta Uplision Beta
Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is in direct contact
with the Rust Belt Riders about the potential of becoming a member
for their ‘pick-up services.’ We have also inquired about becoming a
community drop-off location as they are expanding their services on
the Westside.
