1. Define the Trend: Multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs.
2. Explain its importance: RTI is important because it provides students with
interventions depending on what area they need support in. It is a universal screening model with intensifying interventions that accelerate student learning and promote positive, prosocial behavior.
3. Organize and Reveal 3-5 BIG ideas within the Trend
4. Describe what it might look like in an art room or learning community
RTI is often used in elementary school settings to provide students with a built-in time for interventions. RTI is something that all students participate in, which makes it a less public way to provide students with interventions. RTI supports both learning and behavioral needs. Most students (80%) only need tier one interventions. Roughly 15% receive tier two interventions. Only 5% of students receive tier three interventions. Specialists in a school are sometimes used for instructional support during RTI (if it occurs at the same time of day for all students). Specialists can be supportive of RTI by communicating with classroom teachers and finding ways to incorporate interventions in their classrooms. For example, if one class has a significant of students who receive additional support (tier 2/tier 3) for reading, an art teacher can use an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates reading practice in their lessons.
