PROBLEM SOLVING:

SITUATION 1: An open channel has a bottom width of 4.5m. The velocity of flow is 1.2 m/s.
Determine the following.

1. Discharge based on the design of the most efficient trapezoidal section. (5pts)

2. Discharge based on trapezoidal section with one side vertical and the other sloping 45°
and the depth of flow of 2/3 the base width. (5pts)

3. Discharge based on minimum seepage with side slope of 65°. (5pts)

SITUATION 2: A jet of water 15 cm in diameter flowing at 360 L/s strikes normal to a fixed
plate.

4. What is the force exerted by the jet on the plane? (5pts)

5. If the plate moves at 6.8 m/s in the same direction as the jet, what is the force exerted by
the jet on the plate? (5pts)

6. If the plate moves at 6.8 m/s in the same direction as the jet, what is the power delivered
by the jet? (5pts)

SITUATION 3: Water flows at the rate of 20.75 m3/s in a trapezoidal canal having sides sloping
50° with the horizontal and base width of 3 m. Assume n = 0.016 and So = 0.003.

7. Calculate the normal depth. (5pts)

8. Calculate the critical depth. (5pts)

9. Calculate the critical slope. (5pts)

10 . It deals with the study of the motion of a fluid and of the interactions of the fluid with is
boundaries. (5pts)
