Figure below shows Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs which states that the physiological needs of

the person should be met first before he/she/ could be able to satisfy his/her physiological needs and
eventually reach self-actualization.

The situation of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) families is a clear representation of this theory. While
some are able to satisfy their physiological needs, some of the psychological needs like belongingness
and love are not met at all because of the physical distance of the family members. While parents
considered to address the economic concerns of their families, the psychological needs of the family
members which is also important is often overlooked.

The theory of attachment of Bowly, Harlow and Lorenz suggests that children come into the world
biologically pre-programmed to form attachment with others, social beings as they are. Such will help
them to survive. (Rendeza, 2017).
