10 x 2 marks
1. What are the points to be considered while designing a signal conditioning circuit for
thermocouples, briefly explain.

2. Show how the lead resistance problem in RTD is completely eliminated using 3-wire and 4-
wire RTD.

3. Why ratio pyrometer is beneficial in industrial measurement? Comment on the type of detectors
used with this pyrometer.

4. (a) How current-time characteristic of thermistor is used in designing a time delay in engineering
applications?

(b) How voltage-current characteristic of thermistor is used in detecting the liquid level?

5. A copper-constant thermocouple was found to have a linear calibration between 0˚ C and 400˚C
with emf at maximum temperature (reference junction temperature 0˚C) equal to 20.68mV. If the
indicated emf is 8.92 mV in thermocouple circuit, the temperature of hot
junction is _______________.

6. How mass flow is measured by inferential method? Give an example, and explain why direct
mass flow measurement is advantageous.

7. Why ultrasonic flow meters are preferred devices in industrial automation? Justify with an
example.

8. Name a flow meter which is generally employed for monitoring flow in industry and give its
prime advantage.

9. How volumetric flow is measured using mechanical flow meters? What are the advantages of
these flow meters in industrial measurements?

10. Why head type flow meters are largely employed in process industries? Explain the
measurement principle of any one head type flow meter.
