After we had recorded it, Woody asked Dick to ask me to play just one chorus of the tune, solo guitar, and | ad-libbed a rubato version of it, playing it much as | imagined Eddie Lang might have played it. In the final version of the movie we only hear the last couple of chords of the piece, although the full version is on the soundtrack album on Sony Classical Records. A few weeks after we had made a demo recording of "Unfaithful Woman,” Woody asked Dick to write a more virtuosic guitar feature piece, and he came up with “E" is for Emmett’ (appropriately enough in the guitar player's key of E). Its in the tradition of the ‘30s American guitarists like Dick McDonough and Carl Kress, with its swinging chordal riffs and contrasting slow middle section. Woody decided not to use this piece in the film, but | recorded both “E” is for Emmett’ and “Unfaithful Woman” on my 2002 solo guitar CD "My Shining Hour” on Concord Records. | think they are both nice additions to the solo plectrum jazz guitar repertoire. | made practically no changes to the pieces as Dick wrote them, other than adding a few guitaristic flourishes (like the harmonics at the end of “Unfaithful Woman"). When | asked Dick how he had learned to write voicings that worked so well on the guitar, he told me it was from spending years in the studios with guitarists like Tony Mottola, Al Caiola, and Bucky Pizzarelli, and observing what kind of things worked for them. 41 Unfaithful Woman As Played by Howard Alden Dick Hyman ‘on “My Shining Hour” from “Sweet and Lowdown” Rubato—Slowly and reflectively GMajr codt1) GMaj7 C13 FMaj7 Brot) FMai7 Bho AMaj7 Dis.
