Welcome, and thank you very much for coming to teach in my absence!
Special Notes:
- Be enthusiastic! This is the first class of the day so some students might need some
encouragement.
- Make sure to write on the board and say out loud what you are writing. Several
students in the class follow directions better with visual and auditory ques.
- One student has and IEP for ADD. This activity should not be too difficult for him, but
as you walk around you can remind the groups that they all should be working
together (do not call him out specifically if he is distracted).
Class is to begin at 8:00. Begin by greeting the class and introducing yourself. You may tell the
class that Ms. Ahart was not able to be here today, but you all will still have a fun activity to do
regardless. You may start asking attendance by calling students by name off of the list that is
with these directions. If any students are more then two minutes late mark “late” by their
name. If any students are absent mark an X by their name.
Once you are done taking attendance tell the class that they will still be doing warm-up
sketching, and that the word today is “Mysterious”. (Every day the class does a ten-minute
warm up sketch based off of a key word. This serves the purpose of warming up the students’
hands and minds before beginning the actual lesson. Each student’s sketchbook will be in the
class drawer marked “Intro to 2D Art” and they should retrieve them if they had not when they
walked into class.)
Main Activity
Once the ten-minutes of warm-up sketching is done and students have returned their
sketchbooks you will let them know that now the main activity will begin. Explain that the
activity is called “Mosaic Team Challenge”, and that today will be a small competition between
table groups to make mosaics and at the end of the period the class will vote on their favorite
to be the winner!
Next explain that Ms. Ahart wants the class to watch a quick video about mosaics before they
begin. Make sure to tell the class that the video is meant for a younger audience than them, so
it will be a little goofy!
Once the video is done repeat what you wrote on the board out loud so that the whole class is
aware. Then the first person from each team will come to the desk where you will hand them
each a box full of multicolored tiles and mancala beads. (These will be in the grey locker by my
desk labeled “Mosaic pieces”). Once they their boxes they may begin.
While students are working, move around the room and observe. The class knows better, but
just in case they will have the best behavior if they know you are watching. Make sure no pieces
fall to the floor, and if you see any point them out to the table group to pick them up. Feel free
to talk to students as you move around them and ask questions about how their mosaic is
going!
At 8:35 let students know that they have five minutes left.
At 8:40 call the students to stop where they are because time is up. They may calmly walk
around and look at their classmates’ mosaics and think about which one they want to vote for.
Remind the students that they cannot vote for their own mosaics. Give them a minute to look
around and then return to their seats. Make sure to tell them not to clean up until they are
done voting and they have taken pictures for Ms. Ahart to see tomorrow! Once the class is
sitting respectfully, you will write the table numbers on the board (each table is numbered).
You will take tallies for the vote for first place, circle the winner, and then do the same for the
second and third places.
Congratulate the class on their great work! The class will do a clap for each of the winners.
Once that is done the students may now put their pieces back in their boxes and be returned
back to you. Remind them to be careful not to get any on the floor! Students will not be able to
leave until the floor is clean and everyone is sitting back down quietly.
If there is time before the bell rings, ask the students if they liked this activity, if they would
want to do another competition activity again, should Ms. Ahart include prizes if the class get to
do something like this again?
Dismiss the class at 8:50 once they are sitting quietly and there are no pieces on the floor. Make
sure to wish them a good rest of their day!
Between now and then next class please write down a couple of notes of how the students did,
what the placing was with the groups, if there were any issues, and how the students answered
the wrap up questions.
Hopefully you enjoyed working with the Intro to Two-Dimensional Art class! Thank you again!
