HOMEWORK # 1

1. (50 pts.) The following are three sets of data for the atomic mass of antimony:
Set 1 Set 2

121.771 121.752

121.787 121.784

121.803 121.765

121.781

a. (10 pts.) Determine the mean and standard deviation for each data set.
b. (10 pts.) Determine the 95% confidence interval for each data set.
c. (15 pts.) Determine whether the 121.803 value in the data set 1 is an outliner for that
set at the 95% confidence level?
d. (15 pts.) Determine whether the mean of the data set 2 is identical to that of data set 1
at the 95% confidence level.
2. (50 pts.) Two different analytical methods were used to determine residual chlorine in
sewage effluents. Both methods were used on the same samples, but each sample came
from various locations with differing amounts of contact time with the effluent. Two
methods were used to determine the concentration of Cl in mg/L, and the results are
shown in the following table:

a. (20 pts.) What type of t -test should be used to compare the two methods and why?
b. (20 pts.) Use the t-test chosen in question a to determine if the two methods give
different results at 95% confidence levels?
c. (10 pts.) Does the conclusion depend on whether the 90%, 95%, or 99% confidence
levels are used? Explain.
