Zylan Ghareeb I don’t believe that I have made a comment on
Zylan so far, but I wanted to report that she is very bright and a very consistent student. She has a good understanding of the Greek language with virtually no interaction with Greeks- she has a book and studies on her own, it’s been a year now, she said to me. Today she expressed interest on how university in Greece works, and at some point she even asked if she could enroll. Last week she asked what we celebrate at Christmas. She wants to learn everything. She appears to be hopeful and hopeless at the same time. She needs friends and wants friends, but she does not know how to find them, and she is aware that she does not know how to function in a society that is formed differently than the society she came from, and it operates differently, too, so that makes her reluctant. From what I understand from my interaction with her, she comes from a sheltered, close-knit family (and is here on her own) and doesn’t know how to endeavour life outside of family, and at an unfamiliar place, with an unknown future. She is thirsty for it though, and I am sure she will grasp at any learning and progressing opportunity that would be presented to her; she just needs the support.
