Hidden Gem of a Positional/Strategic Primer

This is a book that you may not have heard of or know much about, but I would classify it as a
'hidden gem'. I think that the name is misleading, as 'new' really means concepts which have
become established since Evans' heyday in the mid-20th century. Also misleading is that the
title doesn't due justice to the real content of the book, which I see primarily as a primer of
positional/strategic chess. The lessons are concise and written with Evans' always punchy and
lively style. The examples are well chosen, and in toto lead to a pretty well rounded primer that
is beyond the scope of concepts found in Chernev's uber-popular 'Logical Chess Move-by-
Move. Yet is more basic and concise than in Nimzovich's 'My System' and similar titles. As
such, I think many players who have worked through hundreds of tactical problems and a
Custom personalized Photo Puzzle For Yo… basic game collection like Chernev's would be primed to benefit from the more advanced
$
22.99 material found here, and then move onto Silman's 'Reassess.." or even Nimzovich. This
Shop now edition is in algebraic, and as such for most would be preferred to the original edition.

There are so many errors, just in the first chapter, that makes this a frustrating read. I have
had to look up games on-line to follow the thread. This has become such an arduous task that
I may give up on reading this book. I don't understand how this even made to print. I'm sure
the content is good, but it is an impossible read so far.

Understanding the concepts of pawn structure, space, force and time is mandatory. This book
does a good job of introducing them. It is certainly a chess classic. I am just here to agree with
the other reviews concerning typos and bad diagrams, there indeed are plenty. I get the feeling
this book was not proofed by a chess player. Chess text and diagrams require chess educated
editing.

The concept is good. What makes it only OK is lack of a proofreader. Typos in the print or the
diagram are every few pages it seems. I am only partly through the book but a lot of time is
spent trying to fathom what the diagram REALLY is or what the print REALLY is trying to say. I
don't buy books with that expectation.

I'm only a couple of chapters in this book and I've noticed a number of diagram and
proofreading errors. Most of the positive reviews here are dated before this 2011 version so I
assume the older version was fine. You'd be better off finding a used copy of that.

You can go online to ossimitz's chess page and get the ChessBase files associated with all of
these games in this book--as annotated.
I'm telling you--Ossimitz is doing a real service to the authors of the chess book game
collections on his/her site. It definitely makes you want to buy the book. In fact, I would not buy
books that don't have the ChessBase files.
If this review does not make sense--you're probably just learning chess and have never heard
of ChessBase. In that case, buy this book because it's good for beginners as well as
intermediate level (Class A and expert) players.
