Q1. It is proposed to build a new power station that closed to Seri Iskandar district,
Perak as part of the state’s masterplan due to an increase in population in that
area. As an Environmental Engineer, create a comprehensible assessment on
the potential impact of pollutants that produced from the proposed power station
to the city center district officer. The report should include the predictive model
of resultant ground-level contaminant concentration resulting from the proposed
releases and your recommendation. The following is the information of the
proposed power station.
The power station is to be built in valley in which the wind is very constant and
regarded as unidirectional (1-dimensional). This prevailing wind blows from the
proposed power plant site towards the town of Seri Iskandar, Perak Malaysia. It
is projected that an annual pollution emission rate is 1000 kg/min and
meteorological information at site is given as TABLE Q1a. The proposed stack
height is either 30 m or 60 m. The ecological location of Seri Iskandar city center
is given in TABLE Q1b.

Q2. a. Data from hydrological cycles is very important to be identified not only
for the designing, operating, and maintaining water resource
management systems, but also for a variety of applications. Elaborate the
importance of hydrological data for any TWO (2) suitable application and
discuss the impact on human life should the natural cycle is disrupted.

b. Bestari Jaya District has been directed to upgrade its primary WWTP
(Wastewater Treatment Plant) to a secondary plant that can meet an
effluent standard of 25 mg/L BOD5 and 30 mg/L suspended solid. They
have selected completely mixed activated sludge system for the upgrade.
The existing primary treatment plant has a flowrate of 0.029 m3/s. The
effluent from the primary tank has a BOD5 of 240 mg/L. The estimated
requirement to design the new treatment plant is given in TABLE Q2.
Evaluate the required volume of the aeration tank.

Q3. a. Landfill is the oldest and most common form of waste disposal. Adverse
pedoclimatic conditions in the landfill such as gas problems, shallow soil,
nutrient deficiency, elevated temperature, and leachate contamination
hinder vegetation establishment. Biogas release contributes directly to the
global warming due to its methane content. Since the official signing of
the Paris Agreement on 22 April 2016, Malaysia is committed to reduce
the GHG production from its various industries including waste disposal.
This ratification further reverberates the Income Tax Act 1967- Income
Tax (Qualifying Plant Allowances) (Control Equipment) Rules 1998 where
the government has provided special capital allowance incentive for the
companies which install pollution control equipment. The allowance rate
is stipulated under Schedule 3 of Income Tax Act 1997. As an
environmental chemical engineer, propose a solution for the current
landfill problem to promote environmental sustainability as outlined by the
United Nations. With aid of a diagram, discuss the proposed solution and
its impact towards environmental preservation.
