PROPARTIES OF ENGINE CONSTRUCTION

 The following are the properties of engine construction materials.

1.Fatigue.
Fatigue is the weakening of material caused by the repeated loading of material.

2.Hardness.
It is the ability of material to resist permanent shape change due to external stress.

3.Creep.
Is the property of material which indicates the tendency of material to move slowly and deform
permanently under the influence of external mechanical stress?

4.Resilience.
Is the ability of material to absorb the energy when it is deformed elastically by applying stress
and release the energy when stress is removed?

5.Damping capacity
IS the ability of material to absorb energy by converting mechanical energy into heat?
A large damping capacity is desirable for materials used in structures where un wanted
vibrations are induced during operatioinsuch as machine tool bases or crankshafts.

6.Thermal conductivity.
It is the property of a material to conduct heat materials like cast iron have high thermal
conductivity which makes them suitable for construction of engine parts.
