Iti based on the assumption that 2 fire in the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle is unlikely to occur when the burning rate of the Interior material under the action of @ small flame is zero or very smal Extensive information on existing test methods was collected and evaluated. In view of safety standards which are already mandatory, considerations for SO3795 were based primarily on the test procedure defined in US. FMVSS 302. After extended discussions, it was decided to incorporate the combustion chamber described in this International Standard, In the standard test, a specimen of material is placed in a U-shaped specimen holder in the horizontal orientation and is exposed to the action of a defined low-energy flame for 15 s in a combustion chamber, the flame acting on the free end of the sample. The test determines if and when the flame extinguishes or the time in which the flame passes a measured distance. ‘The apparatus is bench mounted, ergonomically designed and simple to use. It is ideal for use in quality contro! applications. A wall mounted variable speed extraction hood Is also available as an option to achieve the correct flow characteristics through the apparatus chamber. This equipment may involve hazardous materials and operations. There is also the possibility that toxic and/or harmful smoke and gases may be produced during testing. Its the responsibilty of the user of the equipment to establish appropriate health and safety practices in consultation with the Health and Safety Officer. HC Ig0 3795 User manual V1.3 2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION ‘THE TEST APPARATUS: ‘The apparatus is manufactured in accordance with standard ISO 3795 and FMV SS 302. It consists essentially of three main items, the Combustion Chamber, the ignition burner assembly, the Specimen Support structure, as well as a number of supplementary items. The main items consist generally of the following: COMBUSTION CHAMBER: ‘The chamber is manufactured from stainless steel sheet complete with an access front window. The window is made from 4mm toughened glass and is designed so that it can be lifted out of its polymer guides, allowing maximum access for operation, service and cleaning. The top of the chamber Is also removable for servicing and maintenance. The chamber has overall dimensions of approximately 575 mm (width) by 260 mm (depth) by 410mm (height) ‘The chamber also conforms to the requirements of other motor vehicle manufacturers, such as Volkswagen, Nissan and Renault. Other accessories may be required for these specifications. IGNITION BURNER ASSEMBLY: ‘The ignition burner assembly consists of the burner tube and a precision needle valve. This is all mounted on a stainless-steel bracket and protected by a stainless-steel plate. The preferred fuel gas used in the test is methane with 3 minimum purity of 99%. The pressure required to obtain flame stability is approximately 17.2 kPa, The flame should be adjusted to give a flame height of 38mm (1.5"). There is a flame template above the burner set at this height for ease of use. HFCIS0 2795 User manual V2.3 ‘SPECIMEN SUPPORT STRUCTURE: ‘The specimen holder is manufactured from stainless steel and incorporates six pins to locate the bottom half of the sample support and the sample clamp plate to aid loading and holding the specimen. The specimen holder is slid into the chamber from the right of the chamber and runs on two supporting rails. In addition, and if ordered, there is an additional specimen holder which has a ‘wired! lower section to support samples that may melt or sag when subjected to the test flame. 3. TECHNICAL DATA ELECTRICAL: 230 Volts AC SO He 2 Amp. IGNITION BURNER GAS SUPPLY: The preferred fuel gas used in the test is methane with a minimum purity of 99%. The pressure required to obtain flame stability is approximately 17.2 kPa. Other gases, e.g. Natural gas may be used but they must have 2 calorific value of approximately 38 MJ/m?. Natural gas supplies may need other gas safety checks and will eed to be fitted to the instrument buy an ‘industrial safe gas engineer’, depending on the location of Installation. This is the customer's responsibilty Gas: 1503795 states that the gas supplied to the burner shall have a calorific value of approximately 38 MJ/m3 (for ‘example natural gas) F¥MIVSS302 states that the gas supplied to the burner shall have a flame temperature nominally equal to that of natural gas. (up to approximately 90% methane] We suggest methane as itis the closest bottle gas to Natural gas and is easy to obtain. Some customers have problems installing propane and natural gas in their facilites. Propane has a CV of approximately 46-50 Mi/m3 50 should also be ok. The instrument can run on any of these gases. The pressure values will need to be changed to obtain a stable 38mm high inner cone flame. DIMENSIONS: The chamber has overall dimensions of approximately 575 mm (width) by 260 mm (depth) by 410mm (height) 4, UNPACKING PACKING DETAILS: For ease of safe shipment, the equipment is dismantled into convenient parts. Its necessary for the customer to re-assemble the apparatus and to adjust the position of the various components, so that the requirements of the appropriate Standard are complied with. The following items are normally supplied: 1. Combustion Chamber complete 2 U-shaped sample holder c/w sensor magnet 3. Chamber window HFC IS0 2795 User manual VI 4, UNPACKING cont. 4. Gas connection assembly c/w lame arrestor 5. Fuseané bulb kit Each unit should be carefully unpacked and checked for any visible signs of external damage; ths should be noted and reported immediately 5, INSTALLATION Before installation, attention should be paid to the following points: a] Voltage: The main supply voltage is 230v 50 Hz 2A or 115V 60Hz 4A. bl Earthing: The earth impedance must be less than 1.6 ohms. When the equipment is received all the items above should be carefully identified, The equipment is re- assembled as follows: 1. Connect the ges/flame arrestor assembly at the brass compression fitting to the rear of the control unit. Be careful not to over-tighten. Connect the other end, inlet side of the flame arrestor, to an appropriate gas supply (as specified on page 5). ~S 2. Insert the specimen holder through the access opening on the right-hand side of the chamber such that it slides on the horizontal rails. The black magnet should align with the black sensor mounted on the rear of the chamber. HeC180 3795 User 5. INSTALLATION cont. 3 It wil now be necessary to check that all ofthe relative positions of the components of the equipment (eg. specimen, specimen holder and ignition burner) are correct to the relevant test standard and any necessary adjustments made 4 Connect the relevant country plug to the IEC mains lead supplied, ensuring live is connected to the BROWN wire, neutral is connected to the BLUE wire and the Earth is connected to the GREEN/YELLOW wire. Connect the IEC lead to the socket on the rear of the control panel. Switch on the equipment at the rear of the control panel 6. OPERATION BURNER IGNITION PROCEDURE: Move the sample holder back away from the burner such that the sensor is not made on the back of the instrument. Alternatively, remove the sample holder completely from the chamber. With the instrument powered on and the gas supply open, press the ‘FLAME’ button and ignite the burner. Ensure that the needle valve is almost shut and open gradually. Do not fully open the needle valve as the flame will gnite as a very big flame in this case, reaching to the top of the chamber. Start off with a small flame and enlarge it, rather than too much gas. Adjust the burner to give a flame height of 38mm using the flame height-checking indicator on the left-hand chamber wall and the burner needle valve. Depending on what standard method you are using: the flame should be monitored for a period (1 minute in 1S03795) before commencing testing. Ensure that the flame height is checked before each flame application. HEC 103795 User manual V2.3 BURNER EXTINGUISHING PROCEDURE: 1. Press the ‘RESET’ auton and this will cut off the gas supply to the burner. 2. Close the main gas supply valve until its fully closed. |ETTING THE FLAME APPLICATION TIME: The flame application time can be set by using the corresponding grey ‘up/down’ buttons below the set point value numbers. These are the smaller digits under the main test elapsed timing digits. The defauit is '15.0° seconds, If you press the far-left button it will change the far-left digit, next one in changes the decimal point position and so on. SETTING MAXIMUM TEST TIME: The timing controller has a default maximum test time of 900 seconds or 15 minutes. This can be changed if required. To do this, press the ‘mode’ button on the timer controller and the 900.0 seconds will appear as 'Set 2", You can change this from 0.1 to $99.9 seconds. Once done, press the ‘mode’ button again on the timer and will revert to the default display. This feature allows you to terminate tests automatically ata set time if required. Please note: Misuse of the equipment is not the responsibility of Concept Equipment Limited. HC 160 2795 User manual V2 TESTING 1. Prepare specimen and place into the specimen holder according to the test method you are working 2. Verify flame is lt and has remained stable for the prerequisite period 3. Verify the flame application time is set according to the test you are performing. 44, Insert the specimen holder into the chamber, until the specimen holder plate is hard up against the right-hand side of the chamber, and the front edge of the sample isin line with the burner flame. The timer will start automatically. After the flame application time has elapsed, the gas supply will be turned off and the timer module will reset to zero and will now start to time the test from the time the flame was withdrawn. Depending on the test method, you may be required to note the time at which the flame front passes the 38mm point, which is inline withthe first pair of pins on the sample holder. 5. Its dependent on the test method when you can stop the test. If the flame does not reach a certain bburn length in a certain time, you are able to stop the test generally. When you are ready to do this, you can simply press the stop button or withdraw the sample from the chamber until the sensor on the rear monitors the change in sample position. (On doing this, the timer stops, and the time elapsed since the burner flame was removed is displayed. Observe and if necessary, record the value shown on the display on the test report. 6. Press RESET’, and the timer display is reset. Re-light the burner as described above and the Instrument is then ready for the next test. PLEASE NOTE: Drippings from test specimens may clog the burner. All burner parts are capable of being disassembled such that the drippings, which may have fallen into the burner tube, may be removed. 7. SERVIC! INTENANCE The apparatus should be checked for calibration performance at specified intervals detailed in the standard. In ‘addition, the apparatus should be regularly checked for leaks in the gas lines. The specimen holders should be lightly brushed clean after every test.
