Gears

A gear is rotating machine part having cut teeth, which mesh with
another toothed part in order to transmit power.
Two or more gears working in tandem are called a transmission.

Functions of gears:
1. To transmit torque
2. To transmit motion
3. To change direction of the rotation
Spur gears
Teeth are cut parallel to gear axis
Used to transmit torque between parallel shafts
Helical gears
Teeth are cut in a helical form (inclined to the gear axis)
Used to transmit torque between parallel shafts
Herringbone gears
Helical teeth of two opposite hands are cut on gear blank to avoid axial thrust
Used to transmit torque between parallel shafts
Bevel Gears
Used to transmit torque between intersecting shafts
Teeth may straight or curved
Spiral gears
Used to transmit power between neither parallel nor intersecting shafts
Teeth are curved in shape (spiral form)
Worm and worm wheel
Used to provide high reduction ratios and correspondingly high torque transmission
Transmits power between neither parallel nor intersecting shafts
External gears & Internal gears
