Question 1

You work for a business that provides a range of services aimed at helping local
organisations respond to the threats of climate change. The mission of the organisation is
to help organisations reduce global warming by cutting down their carbon emissions.

The services include the following:

 Providing a range of consultancy services that offer guidance on adopting

renewable energy solutions;
 Developing publications on environmental issues for sale to organisations;
 Running training courses and seminars to both educate and sell-on other offerings.

In addition to the above, a range of new, innovative products and services are currently
being developed.

Currently the business has 55 staff in total, made up of managers, consultants, trainers,
sales and marketing staff, and administrators. However, the levels of enquires and
invitations to submit proposals for new work are increasing quickly and it has become clear
that if the business wishes to take advantage of these new opportunities, it will have to
increase the number of staff within the business.

The current options open to the business in order to achieve this are:

 To grow the business in an organic way by taking on new full time staff as and
when new business is secured;
 To plan for growth and recruit new full time staff in anticipation of winning new
business;
 To initially use contract staff on short term agreements until the level of new
business increases sufficiently to justify recruiting new full time staff.

There are attractions and risks to each of the above options and the owner of the business
has asked you to provide an appropriate recommendation based upon your own
knowledge and judgement.

The owner has also asked you to consider which organisational strategy should be
adopted by the business to enable it to grow successfully over the next few years.
