At CreditAccess Grameen, we have always aligned business priorities with ‘Social Commitments’
targeting need-based interventions for community welfare in select states of our operating
geographies. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) interventions are focused on enhancing
quality of life of the communities that are located in the vicinity of business locations by way of
creating awareness and providing support.

CSR Framework

CA Grameen’s CSR programme is based on the following framework:


1. Need-based understanding of selected topics in the area of Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, Health
and Financial Literacy
2. Community focused participatory planning for identified programs
3. Monitoring of projects on regulatory basis
4. Evaluation and Social audit
 
CSR Execution for FY 2019-20

Combating COVID-19

Considering the current situation of CORONA COVID-19 pandemic situation in India, CAGL has
decided to focus its CSR activities during the financial year 2020-21 towards the activities that can be
broadly categorized into:
• Support communities in dealing with issues caused by the Corona infection
• Support communities in recovering from the Corona infection
• Support communities affected by floods

Based on the above, CAGL CSR Team had detailed discussions with the local Govt authorities at
state level, District administrations, PHCs, THCs, DHOs, medical officers and Municipal
commissioners to identify the support that can be provided on immediate basis to support the fight
against the disease.
As outcome of these discussions, the following activities were selected to be executed in the Red
Zones Marked in the Corona affected areas of various states and districts.

 PPE (Personnel protection equipment’s) kits to be distributed to the District Hospitals where
Corona positive cases are being treated. PPE Kits are used by the doctors, Nurses and
Frontline support team while treating the CORONA Patients. Each PPE kit consists of N95
mask, sanitizers, hand gloves, shoe rapper, spectacle, gown, cotton and spirit.
 Distribution of Health Kits for frontline corona warriors like Police Dept, PHCs, THCs, Asha
workers and Anganwadi workers. Each Health kit consists of 50 masks and 50 sanitizers –
100 ml each and 50 pairs of hand gloves.
 Distribution of Groceries to frontline labourers/Municipal Workers/Corporation Departments
& GK Customers.
 Distribution of Thermal Scanner to Municipal office and Police Station.
 Distribution of Groceries to GK customers affected by floods and cyclones
Navya Disha, an NGO is the executing partner of CA Grameen’s CSR activities. The activities are
conducted jointly by Navya Disha and CA Grameen staff at select branches. In FY2019-2020, a total
number of 220 branches were chosen across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Madhya
Pradesh for implementing CSR activities. Through this CSR activities, we have reached over a
million people (customers and non-customers). Details of these programmes available in this report.

Flagship Programmes of 2019-20

The primary audience for the Outreach Project is rural women especially the customers of CAGL. It is
our belief that ‘educating a woman will have a profound impact on her family and the community at
large’. 

The flagship programs of CreditAccess Grameen are as follows:

WASH

The Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Program (WASH) encourages personal hygienic practices and
brings behavioural changes by creating awareness in the community about the risks of open
defecation and water contamination. Given below are the activities conducted in FY2019-20

Activities under WASH:


1. Area Level Workshops - 50 area level workshops were conducted for 2,322 staff members
2. Sensitization of Kendra Members - 6,785 sessions were held reaching 83,971 women
(Kendra Members)
3. Village Level Trainings - 2,209 trainings were conducted covering 94,716 women in total
4. Wall Painting - 440 wall paintings were drawn on the prime areas in the villages
5. Street Plays - 2,640 street plays were performed reaching nearly 2,29,167 rural people
6. Social Awareness Campaigns (SAC) - 220 Social Awareness Campaigns were held reaching
59,234 community women

SUSIKSHANA

A unique and holistic education program that provides customized, interactive training to the rural
students on non-curriculum topics such as water, sanitation, hygiene, financial literacy, life skills and
career guidance. Brain storming sessions for students on the importance of identifying their interests
and pursuing them in order to lead happy and successful lives being responsible citizens.

Activities under Susikshana:


1. WASH for 8th standard students
- During the FY 2019-20, WASH conducted 2,260 trainings by reaching out 1,06,422 students
in the four states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
2. Financial literacy for 9th standard students
- During the FY 2019-20, Navya Disha conducted 2,116 trainings by reaching out to 1,08,326
students in all operational states.
3. Career guidance for 10th standard students
- During the FY 2019-20, Navya Disha conducted 2,074 trainings by reaching out to 1,04,338
students in all operational states.

The overall reach of students under Sushikshana Program was 3,19,086.

SUGRAMA

FY -2019-20 report under Sugrama project includes Sand box and regular outreach activities.

Sanitation

WASH trainings for students were conducted to train the children on the importance of toilet usage
and problems of open defecation and health issues related to open defecation. Navya Disha in this
training focussed on usage and maintenance of the toilet and also the importance of hand wash.
To bring behavioural changes among children in rural areas, Navya Disha planned to train school
children in the Sugrama project areas of Urdigere GP, Tumakuru District and Hosavantamuri GP in
Belagavi District.
In the FY-2019-20, 1,462 children were trained with 30 WASH trainings. Competitions were held
with the subject being Sanitation and 480 children participated in 4 Events from 4 schools and
selected paintings of the school children were showcased in awareness campaign, guests and
participants appreciated paintings done by children.
Two World Toilet Day events were organised in collaboration with the Government & Panchayat Raj
institutions where 614 individuals participated and the event had received acclaims from the
departments.

Training on Toilet Usage and maintenance for men

This training for men suggests how they can be more meaningfully engaged to achieve sustainable
behavioural change and new social norms. 10 trainings were organised and 247 men participated
during training and the information disseminated in the trainings are mainly focussed on improvement
in knowledge and adoption of sanitation practices.

Basics of personal hygiene

To create awareness on hygiene practices a total of 35 trainings were organised for students covering
1,390 children and 25 trainings from both the Sugrama projects covering 643 community people.
Menstrual Hygiene Management training programs
Menstrual Hygiene training program helps to break the silence and builds awareness about the
fundamental role that good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) plays in enabling women and
girls to reach their full potential.
25 trainings were organised in 24 villages and 732 women participated and 5 MHM training sessions
were conducted in 2 high schools and 128 children were covered. The same MHM training programs
has been initiated at the Tumakuru block level to train the high school students on MHM with the help
of resource persons trained by Navya Disha. Under this program we have trained 6,195 high school
girls in 165 sessions. Anganwadi teachers were trained at block level with the help of women and the
child department covered 164 Anganwadi teachers on MHM subject. And the same training has been
given to 101 Asha workers in 5 trainings with the help of district health education department.

Trainings to community and school children on SAFE water

Navya Disha organised programmes to help and ensure that every child in the community lives in a
safe and secure environment. Trainings on safe water (water is precious resource- safe keeping), 12
trainings for school children covering 521 children and 15 trainings for community covering 479
community members were covered, these trainings mainly focus on the importance of rain water
harvesting and safe keeping. People who participated in the training showed interest on low budget
roof water system.

Roof water Harvest

Roof water harvesting models have been demonstrated at Urdigere Sugrama project for 3 families.
For feasibility study and technical assistance, we have taken the help of Mr. Ayyappa Masagi from
Water literacy Foundation. He helped to do feasibility study and agreed to supply materials for RWH
and gave technical assistance. 3 Families in Urdigere Project installed RWH system in their houses.

Self-Management

Stress Management camp for class 10th students were organised in Urdigere and Hosavantamuri high
schools in batches of 5 (3 days per batch) with 208 students. After the Exams Students and Teachers
appreciated the effort of the camp which was produced good results in class 10th Exams.
 4 batches of financial literacy training were conducted for 205 children for high school
students.
 3 batches of CG training were conducted for 175 SSLC students for high School Students.
 Science related demonstrations in 6 schools with 21 sessions were covered for 1369 students
of Hosavantamuri schools who participated in demonstrations and Karnataka Vigyan
Parishath of Belagavi worked as resource agency.

Gender sensitivity
Gender sensitivity training was organised to encourage students for an equal involvement in class
activities and ensure equal access to learning materials. In 2019-20, 100 students were trained in 4
batches (15 modules per batch) from 2 schools on Gender Sensitivity.

International Environment day and Plantation drive


To create awareness among school children and public on the importance of International
Environment day and tree plantation, 3 events were organised at Urdigere and Hosavantamuri
Sugrama villages. A total of 1116 people had participated. To initiate the process of tree plantation
drive, Navya Disha started distribution of tree saplings along with forest department. Throughout the
year different kind of fruit plants and other forest species were distributed to people who attended the
climate smart agriculture trainings during 2019-20 FY. Total of 7670 saplings were distributed to
community in Urdigere and in Hosavantamuri 9341 saplings were distributed to the community. A
total of 17011 tree saplings were distributed in Sugrama project.

Climate Smart Agriculture

The organization took up a new initiative to help the small and marginal farmers to improve their
livelihood through sustainable farming in Tumakuru and Belagavi districts. Based on the field visits
and discussions with some of the farmers’ groups, several challenges were observed in Tumakuru and
Belagavi areas such as excessive use of chemical fertilizer, declining soil fertility, low agricultural
infrastructure, lack of knowledge on various agricultural practices, lack of knowledge on value
addition etc. To address these issues several activities were carried out.

Since the last decade, Navya Disha Trust has emphasized on improvement of sanitation specifically to
CAGL customer’s families under WASH outreach program. As part of this, Navya Disha Trust
executed about one lakh various awareness activities continuously across its 4 operational states and
reached about 5 million customers. As a result of this, there is awareness among the CAGL customers
on the importance of having toilet and its usage and nearly 2 million toilets have been constructed.

Presently, as Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India had declared ODF status in
the entire country on 2nd October 2019, Navya Disha decided on closing of ‘Sanitation’ under
Sugrama project with the year 2019-20 and decided to emphasise on ‘Health and Nutrition’ concept
in the years ahead.
