Background

The first Municipal Corporation in India was formed in Madras presidency in 1688
during the rule of King James II on the advise of the chairman of East India
Company, Josiah Child. Similar corporations were then made in Bombay and Calcutta
in 1726 .

Lord Ripon is known as the father of local self government. Lord Ripon, appointed as
viceroy of India in 1880 introduced local self government in India. A resolution was
passed by his government in 1882, establishing village panchayat, district board, taluq
board and municipalities.

Initially, the Constitution of India did not make any provisions for the municipalities.
It was incorporated in the constitution of India only after The Constitution (74th
Amendment) Act, 1992.
