Health and Satety Executive Appendix 9: Isolations for instrument work 1 The removal of instruments (sight glass, pressure gauge, level transmitter, etc) for repair of testing is one of the most common reasons for work on live plant containing hazardous substances, The principles for Isolation of pressure systems cca generally be applied to instrument isolation from the process system or pipeline, See paragraphs 182-136 and 189-196 in the main text, Typical instrument 'solations are shown in Figure 14 oval ‘switch single valve faciity instrument standara — >< enormaty open vaive Pe roxraty closed vate Figure 14 ‘Typical instrument isolation arrangement 2 The Ksolation of an instrument may ereate problems stich as unwanted control system actions when an instrument reading is absent and/or the loss of safety functionality while the work is carried out. Where foss of functionality is not self revealing, you must be particulatly careful to ensure the return of systems to thelr fully operational state on completion of the work. 3 Primary isolation valves should be losated close to the pipe oF vessel fo which the connection is made and be to the same standard of pressur integrity.
