Appendix 9: Isolations for
instrument work
1 The removal of instruments (sight glass, pressure gauge, level transmitter, etc)
for repair of testing is one of the most common reasons for work on live plant
containing hazardous substances, The principles for Isolation of pressure systems
cca generally be applied to instrument isolation from the process system or
pipeline, See paragraphs 182-136 and 189-196 in the main text, Typical instrument

2 The Ksolation of an instrument may ereate problems stich as unwanted control
system actions when an instrument reading is absent and/or the loss of safety
functionality while the work is carried out. Where foss of functionality is not self
revealing, you must be particulatly careful to ensure the return of systems to thelr
fully operational state on completion of the work.
3 Primary isolation valves should be losated close to the pipe oF vessel fo which
the connection is made and be to the same standard of pressur integrity. BS 6/39:
