Modern vs. Contemporary Design: What’s the Difference?

Modern design refers to an era that has passed, while

contemporary design is all about the now and the future.

•The most popular modern design era is the mid-century modern era of the
1950s and 1960s.

•But Art Deco design of the 1920s or anything from then to the vintage look
of the 1970s can also be considered modern.

HOW CONTEMPORARY DIFFERS FROM THE MODERN DESIGNS ?

MODERN INTERIOR DESIGN

Hallmarked by clean, straight lines, geometrical and an uncluttered look.

It's the opposite of traditional interior design with its ornate, antique
furniture and detailed embellishments.

The creation of the modern interior design style is credited to the

group of European designers and architects that started the Bauhaus School
of Design in Germany in 1919.

The BAUHAUS PHILOSOPHY is that form should combine with function

in all designs.
WHAT DOES THE WORD CONTEMPORARY MEAN?

Contemporary style encompasses a range of trendy styles developed in the

latter half of the 20th century.

Pieces feature
softened and rounded lines
as opposed to the stark lines
seen in modern design.

Interiors contain
neutral elements and
bold colors, and
focus on the basics of
line, shape and form..

clear, bold,
dominant, strong.

Both design styles have three general elements in common, which make them good design

area.
How does Contemporary Design Relate to Other Styles?

A space of almost any given style can have contemporary elements

due to the very nature of contemporariness – that is, as a space’s
design changes to accommodate

the shifting preferences, tastes, and needs of the people

who live there, that evolution inherently creates a contemporary

space.
CONTEMPORARY + MODERN

Contemporary spaces can still incorporate modern elements and pieces.

To make these spaces truly contemporary, however,

the modern pieces

(e.g., low sofa, shag rug)
are mixed with other

non-modern elements
(e.g., concrete floor,
graffiti-type wall mural)
CONTEMPORARY + TRADITIONAL

Traditional furnishings take on a contemporary look and feel when they are
combined with lighter elements.

e.g, blonde wood,

an ombre rug, and
a light grey color

contemporary vibe

CONTEMPORARY + ECLECTIC

Eclectic style encompasses a variety of

periods and styles and is brought
together through the use of color,
texture, shape and finish.

Eclectic styles incorporate doses of

contemporary design, simply because
their mix-and-not-match attitude is
embraced in the world of contemporary
décor.

CONTEMPORARY + RUSTIC
A wood-heavy design can be brought into a contemporary design with a few
strategic inclusions, such as plenty of clean straight lines (which show off, the
wood grain beautifully) and cozy layers in neutral colors
