Main differences between Geertz's approach to culture and the ontological

turn within anthropology:

There are some basic differences between Clifford Geertz’s approach to culture and the ontological turn
within anthropology as described below:

Many worlds and relativism: Clifford Geertz emphasized the symbols of human nature and
characteristics to define culture. On the other hand in the doctrine of ontological turn it is assumed that
there are more than one world. From many perspectives any matter is justified.

Interpretation and antirepresentationalism: Geertz described the culture as an interpretation of facts.

But in the doctrine of ontological turn the “reject representationalism” was emphasized. Here how
objects, relations, and classes are visible in different groups of people are analyzed.

Perspectivism and relativism without representation: Anti anti-relativism was focused in the Geertz’s
approach of culture. But in the ontology turn the role of objects and pieces in cultural production, rather
than interaction or speech is emphasized. Also human non-human interactions are analyzed in the
ontological turn.
