Who can ever forget the sights, sounds and yes, even the smells of the Big Top? A DAY AT THE CIRCUS takes you on a musical tour wiiere you will meet clowns who will make you laugh, breathtaking acrobats, on tamers, aeriaists, and even The Human Cannonball. So sit back, elax and enjoy the show ‘Movements (Acts) Fanfare The Grand Entry Acrobats and Aevialists “The Clowns The Human Cannonball ‘Menagerie (Animal Acts) Grand Finale NOTE TO THE CONDUCTOR: ie If you plan to use a ringmaster to announce each movement, the enclosed script (feel free to make an additional photocopy for the ringmaster) is designed to coordinate with the “Wwhistie and announcement” measure in each movement. This would be a great opportunity to get your administration invoived in the music program. Why not rent a ringmasters costume and get your school superintendent, principle, or another administrative individual to help with the production? (A gentle reminder: if the person who performs the part of the ringmaster is not a musician, you may wish to have the whistle blown by a member of the percussion section or by yourself) Cross-curriculum opporturitties: Why not take this opportunity to work with other departments in a cross-curriculurn project? The theater department could nave students dress in appropriate attire (clowns, animal trainers, acrobats, monkeys, etc.) and the art department could make placards containing the names of each movement or draw special pictures of each act. Let your imagination run wild! Since each movement is independent of the others, itis important that each be approached with a mind toward disceming its unique characteristics. Some of these considerations are as follows: Fanfare The directive for this movement is Majestically. Please notice that this is not a fast and furious fanfare, rather one of moderate tempo and great dignity. Be careful to observe all dynamics and accents, The Grand Entry : - This is written in the style of a fast and furious circus march so close attention will need to be given to details such as dynamics, fast moving eighth and sixteenth notes, and crucial accents. If the tempo is too fast, feel free to take a slower pace. if this is done, it will be necessary to play all of the non-slurred notes even shorter then normal, to help give an energetic performance. The very loud crowd noise in measures seven and eight should involve whistling, hooting, hollering, etc. Don't be conservative here! It should gradually fade away into measure nine DT rrr ewe eee re 99930200088 ITSFIIIETSHSLEBELEEKBY & ae eS Acrobats and Aerialists Designed to capture the feel of a gliding waltz, this movement requires a great deal of contrast between le and staccato playing, marcato accents and dynamic contrasts. Be sure to let the main thee (measure 15) Fi PPowe the band. Heavy oF lethargic playing will destroy the flow of the music. Should you aesre to do « feel free to add musical nuance to this theme The Clowns Fast and energetic isthe directive that truly captures the nature ofthis mevement. All of the percussion sou effects must be carefully rehearsed to be sure that they are rhythmically secure. Should you not have all or instiuments suggested, feel fee to substitute with instruments as close to the original as possible (note. te starter's pistol should contain blanks!) Let the trombones have fun with the glissandi, but be sure to keep tt shythmically accurate. The Human Cannonball This movement will require some imagination. Everything is fay straightforward until measure ten. In this easure, beat two represents a huge cannon blast. Ifthe bass drum and timpani do not provide enough sou for an effective cannon blast, feel free to substitute as necessary, The spoken “oo0-eee", represents the cont reaction as the Human Canrenballfles through the air. For added effect, have the band members all look tc on aide of the stage and move their heads in unison, across the stage as though they are following the fig Of the Human Cannonball through the air. Measures ten and eleven should be free of any given tempo, but begin and end together. The last two notes represent the circus band playing a final fanfare cadence (al dal"), as the flying performer lands in a.safety net - “ featuring musical references to many different animal acts, this movement changes style and character sever times, The fast moving sixtesrith passages must be carefully measured and the soft And -taccato passages me not effect the tempo. Grand Finale [his movement features all of the acts presented eater in a grand parade around the big top Keep the energ high and the music full of power and style, As each meiody is brought back from the preced! ing movements, { sure to capture the tempo and spirit of each act. t Special Note: ‘ A Day at the Circus is the final installment in the James Cumow trilogy, A Day at the Zoo, A Day att Museum and A Day at the Circus (all music is available from Curnow Music Press, Ine).
