Efective communication is of the utmost importance when

delivering healthcare. Without it, the quality of healthcare would be


impaired. Healthcare costs and negative patient outcomes would
increase. There are multiple components to effective communication in a
healthcare setting: healthcare literacy, cultural competency and language
barriers. If any one of these components is compromised, effective
communication does not occur. Effective communication is bidirectional
between patients and healthcare systems. If either the patient or health
care provider lacks clear understanding of the information conveyed, the
delivery of care is compromised. The importance of communication in the
healthcare industry can help prevent injuries, patient dissatisfaction,
anger and death, increase trust between the patient and the caregiver,
and strengthen relationships with other staff members. The most
significant and major fundamental of the communication is that every
person has a different kind of requirements and needs. It is clear that the
communication skills include proper listening, explaining to other, staying
calm, talking very slow and understanding the gestures of others.
Different service users might need diverse communication pattern in
order to get satisfied and expected treatment. The benefits of effective
communication in a healthcare setting are immediate understanding of a
patient’s condition and needs, understanding the emotional state of
patients, tracking changes in care and identifying specialized needs.
Ineffective healthcare delivery increases the likelihood of negative patient
outcomes. It also increases patient utilization of inpatient and emergency
care. Consequently, the burden of cost on healthcare systems increases.
In conclusion, good communication is vital from the outset, not only
to establish good rapport but also to avoid the harm that can ensue from
failed communication.
