1. INTRODUCTION

Bed rest, also referred to as the rest-cure, is a medical treatment in which a person
lies in bed for most of the time to try to cure an illness. Bed rest refers to voluntarily
lying in bed as a treatment and not being confined to bed because of a health
impairment which physically prevents leaving bed.
If a person is bedridden i.e. being  bedridden  is a form of immobility that can present
as the inability to move or even sit upright. It differs from bed-rest, a form of
noninvasive treatment that is usually part of recovery or the limitation of
activities.  These conditions will prevent the patient from daily activities and
sometimes prevents from speaking and movements.
Thus, we propose a smart system which works as an interface between patient and
caregiver. The patient can communicate as the system detects eye blink and
interprets the eye blink pattern to various actions required to be done.
We will study dlib’s facial landmark detector:
The pre-trained facial landmark detector inside the dlib library is used to estimate
the location of  68 (x, y)-coordinates  that map to facial structures on the face.
The indexes of the 68 coordinates can be visualized on the image below:
2. OBJECTIVE AND BLOCK DIAGRAM OF THE PROJECT

2.1 OBJECTIVE
Paralyzed patients cannot move, so they cannot communicate easily, but if there is
any way to convey their message, it would be great way to help them so we will design
a GUI (Graphics User Interface) based program which will focus on patient’s eyes and
face for blinking. Based on various blink counts with left or right eyes he will be able
to perform various tasks.

3. METHODOLOGY AND TOOL USED

3.1 METHODOLOGY

The eye blink is a fast closing and reopening of a human eye. Each individual has a
little bit different pattern of blinks. The pattern differs in the speed of closing and
opening, a degree of squeezing the eye and in a blink duration. The eye blink lasts
approximately 100-400 ms. .We propose to exploit state-of-the-art facial land- mark
detectors to localize the eyes and eyelid con- tours. From the landmarks detected in
the image, we derive the eye aspect ratio (EAR) that is used as an estimate of the eye
opening state. Since the per frame EAR may not necessarily recognize the eye blinks
correctly, a classifier that takes a larger temporal window of a frame into account is
trained.

3.2 TOOL USED

 MATLAB

 IMAGE PROCESSING TOOLBOX

 ARDUINO
4. ADVANTAGES AND APPLICATION

4.1 ADVANTAGES

 Using this new algorithm we can detect symptoms of patient fatigue early
enough to avoid an accident and patient can do all his work easily.
 System implemented without using database storage
 Low coast
 High secure

4.2 APPLICATION

 Can be used in cars for safer driving .

 Can be used to control PC app
 Can be used home automation
