Basics of electrical engineering: Current, voltage, resistance, ohms law, resistivity, effect
of temperature on resistance

Basic DC circuits : KVL, KCL, Source transformation, star delta transformation, current
division and voltage division rule

Electromagnetism:
Magnetic effect of an electric current, cross and dot conventions, right hand thumb rule and
cork screw rule, nature of magnetic field of longstraight conductor, solenoid and toroid.
concept of m.m.f., flux, flux density, reluctance, permeability and field strength, their units
and
relationships. simple series and parallel magnetic circuits, comparison of electrical and
magnetic circuit, force on current carrying conductorsplaced in magnetic field, Fleming’s
left hand rule. Faradays laws of electromagnetic induction, statically and dynamically
induced e.m.f., selfand mutual inductance, coefficient of couplings. Energy stored in
magnetic field. Charging and discharging of inductor and time constant.

A small (underlined above) part to A batch students could not be covered i.e.  the charging and
discharging of inductor and energy stored in magnetic field. I hope students of A batch will not mind if I
request them to refer the copies of B batch students to understand the derivations and the problems
related to this. If you have any problem in understanding please come to me during your mid-semester
exam week.  Also, you may refer any “Basics of electrical engineering” book.

Also, students of A3A4 batch are requested to refer last tutorial taken for B1B2 and A1A2 batch on
Monday(5/9/11).  Please take a note of this.

This will complete your Electromagnetism.

With best wishes for your mid semester exam.
