SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DURING CYCLONE CHALANE

The Meteorological Services (Weather Forecasts) has advised that Cyclone Chalane is
anticipated to hit the country during the period 1 January to 3 January 2021 and the
Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) would like to advise its
valued customers to take all the necessary precautions and measures in the use of electricity
and its infrastructure to protect lives.

All customers are urged to observe the following guidelines and safety measures to avoid
loss of life and damage to property:
 Avoid getting into contact with electricity infrastructure, especially power
cables, whether dangling or not
 Avoid touching any downed power lines report such occurrences to the
power utility-contact details given below
 Do not touch electrical equipment or appliances when wet, with wet hands
or when standing in water
 Avoid standing in submerged places as there is the danger of getting into
contact with electrical cables and getting electrocuted
 Must not lean against electrical poles, cables and any other related materials
and equipment as that would lead to loss of life and
 Turn off power at the mains to avoid unnecessary contact with electricity,
especially when gadgets are not in use.

The power utility is also working closely with the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) to ensure that
damage to and or loss of life due to electrical infrastructure is minimised during cyclone
Chalane.

ZETDC further advises that when heavy storms occur and there is damage to electricity
infrastructure, restoration of service may take longer than is normally the case. In the
interest of safety, there is need for a thorough inspection to ensure the integrity of the
whole network.

Customers are urged to treat all circuits as LIVE as power can be restored without notice.
