Properties of Quadrilaterals

General

1. Sum of all angles = 360

2. Same side angles are supplementary.
3. Only when opposite angles are the same, the diagonals bisect each other.
4. If both opposite angles are congruent then both diagonals bisect.
5. If four sides are the same, then diagonals will bisect the angles (rhombus or square). These are
the only cases where diagonals bisect angles. All sides must be equal. I repeat, all sides must be
equal. In the case of the rhombus, diagonals are different because angles are different.
6. If all angles are the same and all sides are equal, we have all bisecting diagonals and angles with
4 congruent isosceles triangles.

Parallelogram

1. The parallel sides are parallel by definition.

2. The opposite sides are congruent.
3. The opposite angles are congruent.
4. Any pair of consecutive angles are supplementary.
5. Diagonals create two congruent triangles.
6. The diagonals bisect each other.
7. The diagonals are not the same size.
8. Diagonals DO NOT bisect angles.
9. Diagonals ARE NOT perpendicular

Trapezoid

1. One pair of sides are parallel by definition.

2. Lower base angles are supplementary to upper base angles.
3. Diagonals are not congruent, do not bisect each other nor the angle of the vertices. Diagonals
are completely different.
4. None of the triangles divided by the diagonals are congruent.

Isosceles Trapezoid

1. The legs are congruent by definition.

2. One pair of sides is parallel.
3. Lower base angles are congruent.
4. Upper base angles are congruent.
5. The diagonals DO NOT divide area in two different parts. But we can still find a pair of similar
triangles. The base triangles (isosceles) are different because the bases are different.
6. The diagonals do not bisect each other.
7. The diagonals do not bisect angles.

Rhombus

1. A square with different pairs of angles.

2. The diagonals bisect the angles.
3. The diagonals bisect each other.
4. The diagonals are perpendicular.
5. The diagonals divide the area into 4 congruent right triangles NOT Isosceles like the rectangle or
the square, or the isosceles trapezoid (has one pair of isosceles).

Rectangle

1. All angles are right angles.

2. The diagonals are congruent.
3. It an isosceles trapezoid with same bases. 4 isosceles triangles are made (two pairs). They’re the
same in squares.
4. Diagonals DO NOT bisect angles.
5. Diagonals bisect each other (they didn’t in isosceles triangle).

Square

1. Four sides are congruent

2. Diagonals will bisect the angles (rhombus or square). These are the only cases where diagonals
bisect angles.
3. If all angles are the same and all sides are equal, we have all bisecting diagonals and angles with
4 congruent isosceles triangles.
4. Diagonals are the same size.
