ETHICS AND FEELING


FEELING -An emotional state or reaction
-Also known as a state of consciousness such as resulting from emotions,
sentiments or desires.
Example: happy, sad, anxious, angry, embarrass, guilt

FEELINGS/ EMOTIONS/ INTUITIONS


o Play a major role in most of the ethical decisions people make.
o Positive/ negative emotions direct people to act ethically or
unethically
Example:
o Inner- directed negative emotions like guilt, embarrassment and
shame often motivate people to act ethically.
o Outer- directed emotions on other hand aim to discipline or
punish. People often, direct anger, disgust or contempt at those
who acted unethically.
This discourages others from behaving the same way.

 Ethics are not the same as our feelings. Our feelings are not always
accurate indicators about a particular action being unethical.
 Example, spending to much personal time on the internet while at work.

RELIGION AND ETHICS

RELIGION
- Is any set of attitudes, beliefs, and practices pertaining to a supernatural
power whether that power be forces, gods, spirits, ghosts, or demons
(Ember & Ember, 1996)
Supernatural
- Something beyond the material world. As such, it is a matter of faith.
Example: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity

Religion and ethics are often treated as the same.


Religion can set high ethical standards and can provide intense motivations for ethical
behaviour.
Ethics cannot be confined with religion. Ethics applies as much to the behaviour of the
atheist as to the devout religious person.

ETHICS AND LAW


 They govern actions of individuals around the world on daily basis.
 LAWS are created and enforced by governments to mediate our relation ships
with each other, and to protect its citizens.
Laws - enforce the behaviours we are expected to follow
Ethics - suggests what we ought to follow, and help us explore options to improve our
decision making.

ETHICS AND WHAT SOCIETY ACCEPTS

Social norms – are the unwritten rules of behaviour that are considered acceptable in
a group of society
 At the heart of ethics is a concern about something or someone rather than
ourselves and our own desires and self interest.
 Ethics consists of the standards of behaviour our society accepts but being
ethical is not the same as “doing whatever society accepts”
Standards and behaviour of the society can deviate from what is ethical.

b. IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS
 Ethical behaviour is necessary for a society to function in an orderly manner.
 Various steps for ethics improved society as a whole through laws and
regulations.
 Ethical behaviour enhances good governance and accountability.
 Ethics programs cultivate strong teamwork and productivity.
