THE НДММЕЯ Ж THE SICKLE
THE CAPTURE OF MINSK A N D BYELORUSSIA
Though the Soviet 1944 Summer offensive, Operation
Bagration, was but a week old, the German Festerplatz BAGRATION FORCE DISPOSITIONS
(Fortress) cities had fallen one by one. First Vitebsk, then JUNE 1944
Orsha, now Mogilev and Bobruisk had all been assaulted, INFANTRY
surrounded and engulfed by the Soviet juggernaut.
i f * German Infantry: 800,000
The final prize in Byelorussia was Minsk, the capital and
main transportation hub. Two massive Soviet spearheads had 11111111
broken through the German lines and became the Hammer ^ Soviet Infantry: 2,300,000
and Sickle of a grand pincer threatening to completely
annihilate the German Armee Gruppe Mitte (Army Group * * * * m * * * * *кnnn

As June ended with the western Allies still slowly expanding

their bridgehead in Normandy, the Soviets had reclaimed AIRCRAFT
nearly 400 kilometres (240 miles) of eastern Byelorussia, S^S German Aircraft: 850
with their two spearheads now racing to encircle Minsk.

HAMMER & SICKLE

^ Soviet Aircraft: 5,300
Led by the Oslikovskiy Cavalry-Mechanised Group, the
Soviet 5ya Gvardeyskiy Tankovy Armiya (5th Guards Tank
Army) struck as the Hammer or northern spearhead.
Advancing rapidly through the marshes of Byelorussia
they found themselves knocking on Borizov, Minsk's
northern door. Here in a town just east of Minsk they
threatened to both encircle and destroy the German 4. Armee
(4th Army).

The Red Army's 1-y Mechanizirovanniy Korpus (1st Mech-

anized Corps) formed the leading edge of the Sickle. TANKS
Threatening Minsk from the south, the Soviet advance sliced German Tanks: 750
just above the Pripyat Marshes hoping to cut off Minsk from
the southwest. They harried the retreating German 9. Armee
from the ashes of Bobruisk, on to Slutsk, and then finally to
Baranovichi. Q Soviet Tanks: 4,000

GERMAN RESPONSE
With the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) vastly outnumbered
and Soviet partisans destroying their supply routes, a German
counterattack against the Soviet offensive in the summer of
1944 was slow to develop.
The 5. Panzerdivision and 12. Panzerdivision (5th and
12,h Armoured Divisions) along with 505. Schwere ^
Panzerabteilung (505th Heavy Tank Battalion) were the Д р
first German mobile reserves committed to block the two
Soviet spearheads. The 5- Panzerdivision and 505. Schwere
Panzerabteilung supported the remnants of the 4. Armee
facing the Hammer in the north. 12. Panzerdivision
supported the remains of the 9. Armee against the scythe's
swing in the south.

In the end, neither German group could stop the • l i

inevitable and Minsk fell on 3 July. However, within these
first defensive efforts the patterns of Germany's tactical
defence were developed. These initial efforts provided the —
tactics and obstacles to eventually slow and ultimately
stop Operation Bagration at the gates of Warsaw after
relinquishing a total of 660 kilometres (415 miles) of
territory back to the yoke of Communism.

1941 found the 18-year-old Viktor Ivanovich Nevsky
studying. At the outbreak of war he immediately tried to
volunteer at the military commissariat, but was turned down
and told to return to his studies. A month later he returned
and added two years to his age. He was sent to study at the
1st Gorki Automobile and Motorcycle Academy.
In August 1942 the Academy became the 1!t Gorki Armour
Academy. Nevsky excelled and made a name for himself by
mastering the tank's main gun on the move. Nevsky was
also outstanding in all his other practical and theoretical
exams. He passed the tank course with an excellent mark
and was commissioned as a Leytenant in April 1943. In May
he was sent to the front with a reserve tank regiment.
His replacement company of T-34 tanks was incorporated into
the 35th Guards Tank Brigade, 3rd Guard Mechanised Corps.
The corps was committed to the Kursk battles in August 1943
and Nevsky saw his first combat.
Nevsky did well, destroying two enemy vehicles, but the bat-
talion's casualties were high. Four days later Nevsky lost his
first tank after it took two hits and caught fire. Nevsky had
lasted much longer than many of his fellow academy gradu-
ates. Only eight of 57 graduates survived the battle. Nevsky's At first Nevsky's new crew were unsure of him, they were all

Mikhail Andrevich Dedov volunteered to fight in 1939.
Because of his membership in the Communist Party, he
was appointed Komissar in an infantry regiment and fought
during the Winter War with Finland.
After his experiences in the harsh winter fighting against the
tenacious Finns, he decided the way of the future was the
tank and applied for transfer to a tank unit. Not having any
training in tanks, and owing his transfer to his political con-
nections only, he set about absorbing all he could from his
new comrades of the 29th Tank Corps. As a Politruk he didn't
get his own tank, but he soon used his position to ride into
battle with the rest of the tankers.

Because of his willingness to get into the thick of things

with the other tankers, he soon earned the respect of both
the soldiers and commanders. Even though from 1943 the
position of Komissar no longer answered to the Communist
Party, Komissar Dedov retained the respect and influence he
had earned from commanders and tankers.
Dedov went into battle with his tankovy company in the
battle of Prokhorovka during the battle for Kursk in 1943.
His leadership and motivational abilities were soon recog-
nised and he was promoted to Batalon Komissar. However,
this did not halt his love for the action of the front line and
he continued to commandeer tanks to take part in the action.
Many a tank commander was left making his own way to the
rear after Komissar Dedov had paid a visit.
The 29th Tank Corps was committed to battle during the
fighting for Kharkov and then joined the advance on the In May the corps finally went into reserve to refit for

Born in Oppeln, Upper Silesia in 1922, Windgruber
Joined the Wehrmacht in 1940 just before the invasion of
France. He was initially assigned to a rifle company of the
84th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division. Ludwig
received his baptism under fire in Flanders when the
84th Regiment marched through Belgium on its way around
the Maginot Line as part of 16. Armee.
It was here, around the towns of Verdun and Metz that Ludwig
began to show his leadership abilities, helping his fellow
.' soldiers tie down the French divisions in the Maginot Line
while the rest of the German forces marched on. With the fall
of Paris and the capitulation of France, Ludwig found himself
polishing his newly acquired Obergrenadier pip and witnessing
f . the Fiihrer's acceptance of the French surrender. For the next
' six months the 84th regiment did garrison duty in France.
In December 1940 the division was sent to Poland. As a
veteran of Bryansk, Vyazma, and the bitter battle around
Moscow, Obergrenadier Windgruber earned his first medals

By sand bagging and fortifying the house, the Flak Nest was
protected against all but heavy calibre high explosives. Flak Nests follow the rules for Flak Nests on page 49.

The Germans generally built their FlaK Nests in abandoned buildings, filling up the areas below and around the Flak
Nest with rubble to prevent collapse, increase survivability and to limit entry. FlaK Nests are therefore open bunkers and
not buildings and cannot be entered by any team.
You can either model your Flak Nest on the ground or on a single story building. In both cases it has a base size equal to
