Topic

Analysis of Fire and Risk in Storage of Paint and Thinner in Automobile Ancillary
Industry

With the “Make in India” movement more Auto Ancillary Industries are incorporating the
use of flammable liquid(Paints, Thinner) for the process of their final products to get it
delivered at OEM(Orginal Equipment Manufacturer) Direct On-Line assembly.

The use of such flammable liquids imposes great fire and storage risk in terms of financial
loss as well as life and property. The presence of combustible materials, their physical
arrangement, the likelihood of ignition and the necessary amount of heat required are the
factors on which the risk of fire depends upon. In terms of storage, material stacking, area
ventilation, temperature and spacing within different flammable liquids are some risk factors
in the unsafe storage of flammable liquids.

This project concentrates on the cause of the fire and the risk of unsafe storage inside the
manufacturing plant of an automobile ancillary industry. Thus it considers how the fire risk is
affected by the storage and handling of flammable substances in the workplace and the
effectiveness of the existing measures. This project shows a gap analysis between the existing
control measures and the required International standards for fire and safe storage and
handling while working with paints and thinners.

The project also focuses on the development of safe storage and material handling to reduce
fire and explosion in an automobile ancillary industry and to crater the need for safe use of
Paints and Thinners in the manufacturing processes.
