Life is simple, really. It’s all about hard work. Honesty. Family.

Words have
meaning and actions have consequences.

Be it robbing money from a drug cartel or kidnapping a woman to save a baby, all actions have
consequences. Netflix’s crime drama -Ozark- directed and produced by Jason Bateman is just
proof of this with twists that will keep you hooked throughout. Set in Osage Beach, Missouri on
the Lake of the Ozarks, this show which aired on television in july 2017 for the first time, is
based on the lives of a father-Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a mother-Wendy Byrde (Laura
Linney) , son-Jonah Byrde (Skylar Gaertner) and daughter-Charlotte Byrde (Sofia Hublitz ) who
are suddenly required to relocate from a Chicago to a small community in Osage where crime
resides in every nook and corner in the midst of a scenic paradise.where Marty Byrde a financial
planner is threatened to launder money for a drug cartel in order to save himself and his family
from death.

Though initially Ozark felt like another mere addition to a saturated genre, three seasons in, it
transforms into something much richer with a perfect blend of criminal ruthlessness and strained
yet strong family bonds. Therefore highlighting the relationships with family and friends grow
through the thick and thin even though the show gets darker and darker.

Jason Bateman’s portrayal of the protagonist is one of the reasons for his growing popularity of
Marty’s character. His skillful acting projects Marty's personality in a way that never ceases to
amaze the audience. This is beautifully highlighted in his decision making skills which aim at
letting his business thrive while also ensuring that his family is safe.

Some of the highlights include a gripping plot with a number of complex subplots intertwined
within it. The foreshadowing throughout the series is fantastic as it keeps us glued to the screen
throughout. The cast perfectly portray the tensions that plot brings about and have managed to
win several Emmy nominations and plaudits for their brilliant performance. Julia Garner does a
fabulous job as “Ruth”, portraying a young girl who has to constantly manage conflicts between
her family and job. Laura Linney put in a performance for the ages as she superbly played
“Wendy Byrde”, who initially wanted nothing to do with her husband’s business but slowly starts
becoming a part of the conflict as the show progresses. The supporting cast members like Tom
Pelphrey( Wendy’s brother -“Ben”) and Peter Mullan ( “Jacob Snell”) also put forth stellar
performances.

The show takes the viewers on a roller coaster ride through the highs and lows of the life of the
Byrdes. It is extremely relatable to viewers as it constantly provides characters with ethical
dilemmas which often have no ‘correct’ solution as all the potential courses of actions have their
own set of repercussions. Overall, ‘Ozark’ is a must-watch and will keep audiences engaged at
all times
