PREGUNTA 61
Inequality and education: the significance of having a broad view of both concepts.
It has been seen all over the years how the inequality has affected the education process in
most of Latin American countries. The fact varies from one country to another. What affects the
north part of the Latin American countries do not affect the south ones. If I observe, for
example; how poverty, as part of the equality aspects, it affects the schooling in Colombia, I
might say that the first impact that may not let students go to school is the lack of facilities with
respect to nutrition. The students do not go to school if they are starving, and if they go; they
do not give results, saying this in a good sense. On the other hand, I think there could have
been a solution if the education system is changed by providing good guaranties of
sustainability. It means; if a project like this, starts, therefore, it might be finished.
If I make a comparison between the teachers in Latin American schools and the ones we have
at the school where I work, I may say that the difference is not significant. There are teachers
in other countries in Latin America that do not contribute to the teaching and learning
processes, the same happens at the school I am. The teaching styles of some teachers are still
focused on traditional methods. However, there are teachers that are skillful at teaching. Their
specific competences are updated and still in progress. On the other hand, I think that as
educator I might always be thinking of how to change the students' realities so that learning
grants the tools for their performance in society.
What is needed in the teaching and learning processes, is a new education system that
focuses its attention on the flexibilities of the achievements for learning. The making of one
curriculum that pays more attention on diversity, values, cultural and social aspects rather than
the quantification of knowledge.
