Topic : Should stress management taught in schools

Participant 1 : Saakshi

Today stress management is important in everyone's lives. It's necessary for long happy lives with
less trouble that will come about. Stress management involves understanding the psychology
behind or that is causing the stress and finding strategies to deal with, reduce, or eliminate the
stress.Stress can result from viewing yourself or your situations negatively or with insecurity.
Stress reduction results from managing or viewing situations in a positive way, taking
action, organizing, planning, and finding solutions. By doing this you will also feel a
sense of control over the situation and your life.

Stress management should be taught in school as students specially students of class 11th
and 12 th get over scheduled a lot . Firstly at this age a student wants play more and don’t want
to spent time in studying a lot as they know as soon as they enter college a lot of academic
pressure , pressure of getting a job will enter their lives . But still during their 11th and 12th they
are given homework from schools and tuitions. Sometimes many students also prepare for JEE
exams which adds to their stress

If you can’t change the stressor, change yourself. You can adapt to stressful situations and
regain your sense of control by changing your expectations and attitude.

 Reframe problems. Try to view stressful situations from a more positive

perspective. Rather than fuming about a traffic jam, look at it as an opportunity to
pause and regroup, listen to your favorite radio station, or enjoy some alone time.

 Look at the big picture. Take perspective of the stressful situation. Ask
yourself how important it will be in the long run. Will it matter in a month? A
year? Is it really worth getting upset over? If the answer is no, focus your time and
energy elsewhere.

 Adjust your standards. Perfectionism is a major source of avoidable stress. Stopbsetting yourself
up for failure by demanding perfection. Set reasonable
standards for yourself and others, and learn to be okay with ―good enough.‖
 Focus on the positive. When stress is getting you down, take a moment to
reflect on all the things you appreciate in your life, including your own positive
qualities and gifts. This simple strategy can help you keep things in perspectives.

How Teachers Can Help Limit Student Stress at schools or colleges

Because children and teens spend most of the day in classrooms, teachers can play a powerful
role in limiting stress. Some of the ways are :

Limit homework overload

Teachers can work together as a team to avoid piling on too much homework on the same nights
or scheduling tests on the same day.

Keep kids moving

No matter how old students are they can benefit from moving around the room, working at
"stations," taking stretching breaks, etc.

Play music
Studies show music helps people relax and focus. Classical music is great for the classroom and
can serve as a model for students when they study at home.

Talking about issues bothering students doesn't have to take up a lot of instructional time. Even
five minutes going over concerns, writing them on the board and addressing them later can help
students put them aside.

Students are one of the most common victims of stress. Factors such as financial expenses,
overcommitment, family expectations, deadlines and workload all induce stress in students.
While a mild amount of stress is very useful and acts as a motivation for students, too much
stress can interfere with their daily lives.

When built over time, stress can give rise to a host of serious problems such as depression and
anxiety. Managing stress in its early stages can help maximize the college/university experience
and opportunities for students.

Children are exposed to stress in many ways, and they’re not as resilient and versed as
adults are in coping with it. They also need to be educated as to what kind of stress they can take
on their own and what is simply abuse. Stress management can be added to existing health
classes, but teachers and schools can also do things to make school a less stressful place. Phys Ed
classes can be adjusted at all levels to be more about positive exercise and stress free recreation
instead of only competitive sports and forcing one kid to day after day be the last one picked for a
side. Teachers can reduce the amount of homework students are given and instead focus on
nurturing education. Schools can focus on making education a positive element instead of making
it a power display and forcing children to do things they don’t want to or cannot do. Education
can be gamified and made fun instead of being pedantic and teacher-centric. And they can
develop working policies on bullying and work to foster a health and noncompetitive
environment where bullying doesn’t have to take place.
