Ship Vibrations

Assignment 6: Free torsional vibration of propulsion systems Dec./2020

Individual work:

Prepare torsional model of the reduction gear and propulsion shafting system described in the
previous class session, starting with a disk representing the flywheel and until the propeller.
Consider three situations, when the ship is moving: forward, aft and idle.

Work by teams:

Analyze the torsional vibration of the marine propulsion system described in the following.
Main engine is a Caterpillar 3408B, reduction gear ratio 2.0:1, propulsion shaft 3m long and
with 7.62 cm in diameter, and, propeller is 4-bladed, with 84 cm in diameter.

i.- Summarize the information of the equivalent geared system, considering that the available
information does not include reduction gear; clearly identify each element by its name.
Investigate in the web for the propeller dry and virtual mass moment of inertia.

ii.- Applying the procedure developed in assignment 5, calculate the first four natural
frequencies, and its corresponding mode shapes. Plot the mode shapes of original system.

iii.- Prepare a plot of Nengine vs frequency of oscillation, to determine torsional resonance

conditions, and comment on the seriousness of them.
