Technological development, emergence of the internet and mobile phones have resulted in a

decreased interest among children to read books for pleasure. Along with this cause there are other
reasons which make children to read less. Nowadays challenge is to inspire youngsters to engage
more in this kind of activities.
As mentioned above, one of the main causes of the young readers decline is the arrival of movies,
online games and TV shows. These products are more interesting for children than books because
they boost their dopamine level a lot more than novels do. In other words, watching television is
much more satisfying than reading a book. Moreover, what we can read from a book in few days we
can see in a movie in couple hours. Films have video images, actors and scenes, and children no
longer have to imagine by themselves these things while reading a story. Thus, being mostly guided
by their desires and pleasures children choose over and over again things which are more exciting,
funny and thrilling.
In order to stop and correct these patterns, first adults should be aware of negative effects of the
virtual entertainment and positive ones of the reading. Secondly, they should not force pupils to quit
the virtual world and to read more. Instead, their task is to make reading interesting and appealing
to children. One way to do so is to reward them every time they read a book. Knowing that the
benefits and consequences of reading books are higher than those of virtual activities teens will be
more inclined towards reading.
In conclusion, there are numerous causes why children do not read so much anymore and most of
them are related to technological advance. But there are also plenty of solutions to this problem
using the same means which are responsible for this trend.
