After decades of service,

farewell to honorable Joe
Lentol
 

The Honorable Mr. Lentol visiting Satmar Yeshiva, with Rabbi Niederman at his right side

UJO and the Williamsburg community bid an emotional farewell to the

honorable Joseph Lentol, who just concluded a nearly four-decade run as
New York State Assemblyman for the 50th district in Brooklyn.

Mr. Lentol was rst elected to the New York State Assembly in 1972, and
just over a decade later was elected to the ftieth district, which he
represented until his retirement at the end of December. In 2001, Mr.
Lentol was appointed by his colleagues to direct the Brooklyn Assembly
Delegation, responsible for making decisions and advocating for funds and
activities for all areas of the borough.

In Williamsburg, which is part of the 50th Assembly district, Mr. Lentol’s

career was hailed as exemplary, and his retirement was greeted with
widespread poignancy.

“Our heartfelt best wishes to our dear friend Joseph Lentol,” UJO president
and CEO Rabbi David Niederman said, adding how he served with the
utmost devotion for 48 years.

In rst-person camaraderie, Rabbi Niederman declared, “We can't thank

you enough for all that you did to our community, all your constituents, and
for all New Yorkers. Decades from now, people will bene t of your service.”

UJO and the Williamsburg community, he added, “will always remain

indebted for your service, advocacy, speaking out and ghting for the
vulnerable, the forgotten, the weak and for the less-popular segments to
defend their basic rights. Thank you! ‫”!יישר כח! א הארציגן דאנק‬

We also would like to express our best wishes to Chief of Sta Cathy Peake,
for your tireless and capable assistance, support and advice for the
community. You have been a immeasurable asset to Mr. Lentol and the
community. Thank you and thank you to the entire great sta .

In a personal letter to Mr. Lentol, Rabbi Niederman expressed moving

tributes for all his venerable accomplishment as a noble yet erce
community advocate.

“You were always available to help the needy, the downtrodden and the
vulnerable. You stood up against bigotry. No one was more vocal and
e ective to ensure fairness and justice, and protect the rights of the
community. Few people have accomplished so much and helped so many,
as you did,” the letter partially reads.

“As we start our day, we say a Mishna that lists several mitzvas – good deeds
- that a person reaps the rewards of it on this world and also in the world to
come: chie y among them is chesed - charitable
table deeds for those most in
need. Joe, you helped countless people during the years, through pursuing
better policies, bringing assistance to the needy, and intervening on
individual cases. May it bring you a continued and successful happy,
healthy and joyous life and the rewards that you deserve.”

Reminder: Two months

remain for property tax
exemptions
  
Attention: If you currently are utilizing a tax exemption for property taxes,
the deadline to renew that exemption is March 15, 2021, just over two
months from today.

Five di erent tax exemptions are included in this category:

1. Senior Citizens Homeowners Exemption (SCHE), required to be

renewed every two years.
2. Disabled Homeowners Exemption (DHE), required to be renewed
every year.
3. Clergy Exemptions, required to be renewed every year.
4. (For Renters) Senior Citizens Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE)
5. (For Renters) Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE)
 
NEW
If you have not received such a property tax exemption in the past, we
encourage you to peruse the eligibility requirements below to determine if
you qualify. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2021.
 
SCHE Eligibility Requirements:

All owners must be 65 years or older. If you own the property with a
spouse or sibling, only one of you must meet this age requirement.
Combined annual income of the property owners and spouse or co-
owner cannot exceed $58,399.
You must own the property for at least 12 consecutive months prior
to the date of ling for the exemption, unless you received the
exemption on your previously-owned residence.
All owners must occupy the property as their primary residence
except in cases of divorce, legal separation, or abandonment. Owners
receiving in-patient care at a residential health care facility may be
eligible for the exemption.

 
DHE Eligibility Requirements:

Documentation of your disability.

The total combined income of all owners and their spouses cannot
exceed $58,399.
All of the owners must be persons with disabilities, unless the home is
owned by spouses or siblings, in which case only one homeowner
must have a disability.
The property must be your primary residence. If you are receiving in-
patient care at a residential health care facility, your property may be
eligible for the exemption.
Your property cannot be within a housing development that is
controlled by a Limited Pro t Housing Company, Mitchell-Lama,
Limited Dividend Housing Company, or redevelopment company.
Please contact your property manager or managing agent for this
information if you are not sure. If your property is located in a
 Housing Development Fund Corporation development and is in the
Division of Alternative Management Program, it may be eligible.

 
RENTER: senior or disabled
You may qualify for the Senior Citizens Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) or
the Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE) if you ful ll all of the
requirements listed below:

You must be the head of the household;

Your total annual household income must be $50,000 or less;
Your rent or carrying charges must be greater than one-third of the
household's total monthly income; and
must be at least 62 years of age OR a person with a disability

NYS Rent Relief is ON - Apply Till Feb. 1
The New York State Rent Relief program has now been reopened and
expanded, and the UJO is urging eligible tenants to apply as soon as
possible.

Created in mid-summer, the program appropriated up to $100 million from

the federal CARES Act to provide subsidies for tenants who lost income due
to the pandemic. In its rst phase, over $40 million were provided to assist
nearly 16,000 applicants.

ELIGIBILITY
Now in phase two, up to sixty million dollars are appropriated to provide
for the next round of applications who meet all the following criteria:
- Must be a renter and have a primary residence in New York State;
- Must have lost income and become “rent burdened” during the period of
April 1, 2020 to July 31, 2020;
- Households must not be section 8 recipients or living in public housing,
AND
- Before March 7, 2020, household income must have been at or below 80%
of the Area Median Income, adjusted for household size;

Applications for the new round of rent relief are accepted through February
1, '21, so eligible tenants are urged to le their request as soon as possible.
 
Previous applicants for Rent Relief will not have to reapply to be
reconsidered. HCR will re-evaluate all applications that were denied
according to the new criteria and issue revised determination letters to
applicants.

ASSISTANCE
The COVID Rent Relief Extension Program will provide eligible households
with a one-time rental subsidy that will be sent directly to the household’s
landlord. Applicants will not need to repay this assistance.

The Covid Rent Relief Extension Program is not rst come, rst served.
Applications will be accepted throughout the application period. HCR will
prioritize eligible households with “greatest economic and social need."
