Hello everyone. Today I will lecture on Jesus who was God and man.

Continuing from the previous lecture, I will lecture on the God-man Jesus who was God and
man. We will first read from the Bible. It’s 1John. We will be reading from 1John about the
God-man because this part is very important. It speaks of Jesus coming in the flesh and that
he is God. I’ll read from 1John chapter 4 starting from verse 1. “Beloved, believe not every
spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out
into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus
Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is
come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard
that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God, little children,
and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We
are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby
know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”

The reason I am emphasizing on the parts where Jesus is God and man is because there
were many disputes regarding this and there were heretics. Not only does the Bible say that
Christ is truly God, but that he was truly a man. You must have heard this lecture in church
history, but when you look in church history, we can see that Christians during the 3 rd and 4th
century wasted much of their time disputing over the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. A good
number of heretics infiltrated. Those heretics were sometimes honest people and pious, but
many of them fell into danger and corruption after accepting wrong doctrine. So, the Bible is
speaking of Jesus Christ who was truly God and man.

During this time, we will look into the heretical factors that we must be careful of in regards
to the divinity and humanity of Jesus. One of them is denying the divine nature of Jesus. One
is God-man. He is God and man. This is about Jesus, his divine nature. They are denying the
divine nature. One of the things about the heretics is that they deny the divine nature of
Jesus. There were many such heretics. What they taught was that Jesus was merely a man.
That’s what they taught. Many heretics during the early church gave such arguments. Even
currently, the Unitarians belong to this group and put forth such arguments. When most
heretics speak of the Bible, they take just a section of the Bible and emphasis that section.
They fall into it and go towards an extreme in one direction. It’s not that they speak of things
not based on the Bible, but they take a section of the Bible, fall deeply into it, and argue
that. What the Unitarians argued is that the Bible said God is one. God is one. We call that
monotheism; monotheism. God is one. They are engrossed by that and see the Bible only
from that view. They view it from that direction and are engrossed by that. Their argument is
that if Jesus Christ is God, there are two Gods. If the Holy Spirit is God, there are three Gods.
This would be their argument. They are a group that goes to the extreme and fall into heresy
by denying the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. They saw the Bible only from one point of
view. So, they denied the divinity of Jesus. They saw God as one. God who is one has one
Person. They are denying the Trinity of God as a Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Most people read the Bible and even the apostle Peter said, “Wrest, as they do also the
other scriptures.”That is why they fall into heresy and difficulties, and have problems. The
Bible is what God reveals to us. As much as God shows us, we can believe and accept. With
our small understanding and reasoning, we try to understand and solve the Bible. This is
truly being arrogant before God. So, during the time of Jesus, because many people denied
the divinity of Jesus, especially John, the disciple of Jesus, testified the clear words on this.
Let’s look in John chapter 20. In John chapter 20, the apostle John clearly spoke of this fact.
It’s John chapter 20 verse 31. “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”John is clearly
speaking of the reason why the Gospels, why the book of John was written. In John chapter
20 verse 31, Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. The
apostle John clearly and specifically spoke of this part. The purpose of writing the book of
John is to make people believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and by believing in that Jesus
Christ, they are strengthened by his name and receive eternal life. It’s clearly being said
that’s the purpose of writing the Gospels.

Many people during that time denied that Jesus was the Son of God, his divinity, and the
nature he possessed. The Bible is clearly speaking of that. There are many errors because
most heretics are at the extreme and they teach of just one view.

The second heretical factor that we must be careful of in regards to the divinity and
humanity of Jesus is denying the truth of the humanity of Jesus Christ. Not only was the
divinity of Jesus Christ denied, but secondly, his humanity was denied as well. Denying his
humanity also pertains to heresy. There are many things that they argue. One of them is that
Jesus was merely a man, but when he was baptized, the eternal Christ came upon him and
left before Jesus died on the cross. So, it was the man Jesus who died. Does that make
sense? They were saying, “How can a God die?” Because they are denying his humanity,
such things come up. They say that Jesus was merely a man. The eternal Christ came when
he was baptized and left before he died on the cross; therefore, the Jesus who died was the
man Jesus. So, they deny that the body of Jesus Christ fully put on humanity. They say the
body of Jesus was an apparition; the body is only a shell. The one who died was the man
Jesus. Their error was that they separated the eternal Jesus Christ and the man Jesus. Thus,
they denied the true humanity of Jesus Christ. The Word we first read on this part clearly
spoke of this.

Why do you think the apostle John delved into this in the early church? During that time,
many people spoke of these heretical things and propagated them. They were not able to
believe and fell into that. So, if you look at the words we read in 1John chapter 4 from verse
1 through 6, it clearly says, “Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh
is of God.” That’s how it was sorted. The Bible clearly said that Jesus Christ came in the
flesh. He came in the flesh. Depending on whether he came in the flesh is confessed or not,
it’s distinguished whether one is of God or not, or whether it’s a spirit of God or the spirit of
the antichrist. That’s how it’s differentiated. Every spirit that doesn’t confess that he came in
the flesh is not of God, namely it’s the spirit of the antichrist.

Why are these parts important? As we set this lecture in order one by one, denying the
divinity of Jesus or denying his humanity is something that is directly connected to our
salvation and the amazing plan of God who wants to save us, to make us born again into
righteous people from sinners. This amazing purpose and plan of God is being denied. These
parts are very important. From what I know, there are many dangerous heretics that formed
even in Korea that deny the humanity and divinity of Jesus. When we see those people, they
cleverly solve the Bible and they are arrogant because they think they are knowledgeable in
the scriptures. There are many pitiful heretics who deny Jesus Christ and are destroying their
souls. There are many heretics that commit the error of denying the divine nature of Jesus,
and people who deny the integrity of the humanity of Jesus Christ. The Bible clearly speaks
and gives an answer on them.

Third, the integrity of the divinity and humanity of Jesus is being denied. There are errors
and heretics that deny the full divinity and humanity. Why is this part very important? The
third is that the humanity and divinity of Jesus is full. The humanity and divinity of Jesus is
full. Its fullness is being denied that it isn’t full. Heretics that fell into that are called Arians.
There were such thoughts in the early church. In the span of the 1 st, 2nd, and 3rdcenturies,
there was Arianism which denied the integrity of the divinity of Jesus Christ. They say the
Word, which we call Logos, namely Christ, is the first of all creatures. This is their argument.
He is the greatest being. They place Jesus as a creature. There are many heretics in this
modern age. Through the many groups that deny the full divinity and humanity of Jesus
which continually passed down from the early church, passed on and on and it was
developed more and more. That’s what was done. Arianism states that Jesus Christ is the
first of all creatures and the greatest being. Christ is neither God nor man. Certain people
argue that there were people before Adam. They deny the fact that Adam was the first man.
Why? If Adam is not the first man, it won’t be connected to the second man Jesus. They
committed an error of making something different and became a heretic. They say that he is
the first and greatest among the creatures created by God who is in-between God and man.
That is who they argue Jesus to be. They search various such factors in the Bible and lead in
just one direction. If we don’t know the Jesus based on the words of the accurate Bible, we
will be bewildered by such argument from heretics and fall into it. Arians say, “He is in-
between God and man, and is the first and greatest among all the creatures God created.”
They say such things and deny the full humanity. There are many heretics that fell into that.
They argue that Christ possessed a body and animal-like soul, but his mind and spirit was not
of man. They teach that only a part of Christ was man. Only a part was man and they deny
that Christ had a full and true humanity. Only the spirit and mind is Christ, but the flesh and
only a part was man.

As you are listening to this lecture, are things getting complicated for you? As I studied and
prepared for this lecture, in these many parts, there are people who are at the extreme
going in one direction and putting forth their argument. We see many people falling into
strange doctrine as they are deluded and bewildered by it. There were heretics in these
things. That is what I was able to discover. There were many heretics that were one-sided
and denied the full humanity and nature of Jesus. However, Jesus was truly God and man.
Being able to have this in our hearts in faith is truly a blessed thing. He was truly man and
God. The word “truly” was added to it.

Last time during the World Camp, there was a doctor who came with the medical volunteer
group. This is the third year he came to Kenya. We said, “He’s a genuine doctor. He’s real.” It
means he’s a real doctor. He was a surgeon, so he performs surgery. When he looks at
patients who need surgery, he can’t pass them by. He has the mindset of a real doctor. On
the last day, he had to finish the surgery, but there were more patients. He tried to finish the
surgery because the line was long, but there was a female student who I think had a lump on
her neck. She was waiting in line to receive surgery, but because the surgery was over, she
cried. Because she cried, the doctor could not leave the crying patient; he could not end it
there. After he treats her, he has to treat the patient after her and he did the surgery until
three in the morning. There were two female college students who were his helpers. He
thought, “When I return to Korea, I should train these two students, so when we come back
to Kenya, many people can receive surgery. I should train these two.” He made a request to
IYF and invited these two students to Korea to receive training for six months. We call such
people real doctors. I talked about this because the word “truly” came up.

The Lord truly possessed both humanity and divinity. If we say the Person of Jesus Christ,
would it be easier for you to understand? There is God the Father; God the Son, Jesus; and
God the Holy Spirit. There are many heretics that deny that these three Gods are one. They
deny that Jesus Christ possesses two natures. We call people who fell into that Nestorians.
They are Nestorians. They are called Nestorian heretics. Several unfamiliar words came up –
Arianism and Nestorian heretics. Heretics like the Nestorians argued that Jesus Christ was
not one Person with two natures. What did they say? They argued that he was two Persons;
he had two Persons. He was God and man, that is to say, he was a personal God and a
personal man. Jesus Christ is one Person with divinity and humanity, but they fell to the
extreme. Heretics always fall to the extreme. By falling into the extreme, they are denying
that the two natures are separate. God had humanity, but he also had divinity. In other
words, Jesus Christ had humanity, but he was God who had divinity. This is being denied.
They deny that the two natures are separate. They are heretics that teach that two natures
mixed to form one nature.

So, there are many heretical factors. If we don’t have the clear standard of the Word, we will
be deceived by this. A part of them say he’s divine and another part says a new human
nature exists. All of these things belong to heresy. Why don’t we wrap things up now? If we
set these in order, why are there so many heretics? Either they acknowledge a part of the
genuine divinity and humanity of Jesus or they deny both of them. Many errors and heretics
arise from denying the genuine divinity and humanity. What is the Bible telling us? Jesus
possessed two natures. He was an actual man. He put on the human body and he was a
man. He came putting on humanity and he was God who had a genuine divinity. Jesus had
both natures. He wasn’t two people, but one Person. He had two natures, but he was one
Person. That is what God is saying. There are those that say two natures mixed to form one
nature and that he was two Persons. Two Persons mean that he was two people. His nature
was like that, but he was one Person. He’s a personal man and a personal God. He’s God and
man. Many such vague classifications and expressions made people to fall to one side. We
just set these in order today.

He had two natures, but he was one Person. He is God, Jesus Christ, with two natures. He
had the humanity of man and the divinity of God. Jesus was one Person with two natures.
Why am I emphasizing this? Because he is Jesus who came in the flesh to save us, this part
must be clear. In our next lecture, I will straighten this out more clearly and specifically. If we
straighten out the divinity and humanity of Jesus through the precise biblical words, we will
be able to realize the mysterious Word of God in our hearts in which the Lord came in the
flesh to save us; that God came in the human body. Although this lecture may be
complicated and unfamiliar, I hope you can receive the grace of being able to clearly discern
by having your hearts held by the Word of God as these parts are clearly established in your
hearts.

I will end here. Goodbye.
